Did anyone watch this programme last night on BBC1, Panorama?
It was quite shocking to watch as it concerned the unnecessary illnesses that children are experiencing and the cost to the NHS.
There was a 5yr. old boy who weighed as much as a 17yr. old. Children as young as 2 having teeth extracted under general anesthetic and kids with glue ear exacerbated by their parents smoking.

I thought that in most cases the parents were not educated enough about lifestyle to be able to promote the health of their children. The message obviously isn't getting through and preventable diseases in children will soon reach epidemic proportions. Perhaps the education needs reinforcing in schools so that children get the message and pass it on to their parents?

And the mother of the boy was absolutely convinced it was a genetic issue, although they did say at the end nothing had been found!. I did some work at James Cook Hospital a few years back and they have a specialised pediatric constipation unit because the diet of the children in that area is so bad. It's very scary to think what the health of that generation will be like?

I didn't see the program, but just had a look at the link, and yes it is very shocking indeed.

Just the other day, I was walking along with my dog and there was a car waiting to pull out of the junction, and in the car was a lady driving and three very young children as passengers, one in a baby seat. Dangling from the mothers mouth was a lighted cigarette, all the windows were closed and it was a warm day, and inside the car there was a smokey haze.

I don't have a problem with smoking, but people smoking over children, more so in a confined space such as a car is unforgivable. These children don't stand a chance in life being subject from the onset to 20,000 plus chemicals that are in each cigarette, by all means smoke, but refrain from smoking in the presence of children.

Is it any wonder then, that those children that are exposed to tobacco smoke then become smokers themselves, often at a very young age. :(

I saw it and was sad and furious in equal measures. In stark contrast to the Great Ormand Street prgramme on BBC 2 at the same time.
The sight of a very young distresed child coming round after an entirely avoidable procedure brought tears to my eyes.
The future for those poor kids health looks bleak, and they are by no means unique. Thatvis terribly sad.
