Stansted Airport Security

Hi

I am a very regular flyer, every school holidays, through busy London Stansted airport with my 2 children. My son is Type 1 and 4 years old and once I explain to airport security that his pump and handset can’t go through the metal detector or X-ray machine they have been ok about taking him to one side, manually patting him down and swab testing his machines and his insulin cool bag. However yesterday was a completely different story. I explained as usual and the security staff member told me that they had to bring him into a private room to search him with 2 members of staff. I explained this had never ever happened to me and I had only flown out of the same airport a fortnight ago but I was told they are clamping down and this is new procedure that because I won’t allow my son go through their machines this will have to happen every time we fly. I did have my letters from the Consultant with the explanation. I had to go to this private room feeling like a criminal and sign a form for them to pat him down and check in his shoes. I didn’t want to take his pump off him for airport security because it’s his life line and why should I!? I told the staff this is very stressful and I was travelling alone with my 2 kids, it actually triggered a migraine in me and I get the vision aurora which made my journey even more difficult to cope with that on top of everything else. Has anyone else experienced this? I have no idea what to do next time I travel? It may be the security staff member yesterday was a rule sticker but what if this is going to happen for diabetes children all the time? FYI I have flown out of Stansted for years and in the 3 years my son is diagnosed this has never happened.

Your best bet would probably be to contact Stansted directly and let them know your experience?

If they have indeed started new procedures then it could be that they need some tweaking.

I would speak to Stansted first. Like all UK Airports, they have to comply with the rules which are laid down by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regarding Security Screening. If you have no luck with Stansted you could email the CAA direct at [email protected]

Individual Airports are not allowed to set their own rules for security screening but must all abide by the rules and standards laid down by the CAA, who inspect them on a regular basis to ensure they are complying.

Not sure what the rules are for searching a 4 year old with an insulin pump, but I am sure they will be able to tell you whether the security guard was correct or not.

This is also very useful advice -

I was once taken to a private room in Heathrow when, as the security guy explained, I chose to have diabetes so could not go through the full body scanner.
They would not let me put my shoes or jacket on, did not give me time to put my laptop in my bag but made me carry it all across the Heathrow security area accompanied by three security staff. Who were carrying nothing.
Like you, I am a frequent flyer and have only experienced such terrible service the one time.
I found the name on of the head of security at Heathrow and sent him an email.
I received an apology and a promise to train their staff. I have travelled through Heathrow 5 or 6 times since and everything has been fine.

I have never flown from Stanstead with diabetes.
I flew from Bristol last month and they were fine.

The need to remove an insulin pump is ridiculous as a patch pump cannot be removed.

Oh no poor you and how very upsetting but I’m glad you weren’t put through that again.
