Hey all.

I'm new to this diabetes thing - Was diagnosed a fortnight ago. My problem is that since then, I'm pretty much constantly hungry. I've always been a big snacker, but I'm quite thin too. I'm 21, just shy of 6ft and 11stone. I'm still at home with the parents, and they're cooking the best meals for me to keep me going throughout the day and not rely on snacks, but I'm still hungry all the time :P

Is this just something I'm going to have to get used to?

Thanks,
Dom.

Hi Dom,

It is something you can get used to yes. But at the same time, you can also try adapting your treatment to your lifestyle.

What sort of things do you snack on? You could find alternative snacks. Nuts are a big favourite around here, because you can snack on them and you usually dont need any insulin for them... people seem to like macadamia nuts! The low carbers on the forum will be able to give you some really good advice on low carb snacks.

Learning about carbs will help you alot, so make sure it's something you familiarise yourself with. If you are on a basal/bolus regimen (MDI) then you will need to work out your carb:insulin ratio. The idea behind that is you can match your insulin to any food you eat, so you dont HAVE to cut out things like pasta, potato's and bread if you like those things that is.

It's a big learning curve but you'll get used to it! If you have any questions you can always ask on the forum!

Hope that helps some!

Hi Dom, dont know if i can be helpful here but someone will in a while i bet. i'm not 6feet tall, and i'm not thin (yet. working on it) but i'm never hungry. I eat lots of meat and mushrooms, eggs, and nuts to snack on also cheese is great snack food with a apple. You might be able to eat lots more you will only know by experimenting and testing testing and testing.

Read the food threads, theres lots of interesting things to eat. Protien and fat fill you up.
