Hi.

Looking at my recent lipid profile I'm thinking my HDL and triglyceride / LDL ratios are good. But still recommend a statin. I've declined for now. Am I making a mistake?

Cheers.

Thanks. I wasn't sure I was working it out correctly. I'll mention this next time the docs offer a statin but I know they'll brush it aside.

Had an appt last week with my cardiologist, it was a routine appt after having my aortic valve replaced at Papworth last October. After a discussion about my AF problem, the conversation came up about Statins. Was delighted to hear him say that he was pleased I wasn't on statins as seeing I don't have any evidence of heart disease, he said I don't need them. Thank goodness he didn't try to foist them on me. Wonder how many doctors think this through?

UK guidelines is offer statins to anyone over 50years old as a precaution! Ridiculous IMO. The GPs get paid for prescribing statins. They ask me every 3-6 months and I refuse every time

Speaking from the other side of the fence... I am on statins now, been around 4 months, was very dubious based on possible side effects but as my bad cholesterol had crept up to 5.6 I thought just try it, latest blood results has it back down to 3.6 and no apparent side effects, I don't mind taking something as long as it doesn't affect my quality of life, but certainly don't fancy the side effects of above average bad cholesterol either.
