Hi all, hope I've posted-in the right section???

Please note from the start this is my findings and indeed my conclusions! I apologize for the length but its a topic which is close to my heart (pardon the pun) and effects so many.

The best place to start is the beginning is it not? Is Cholesterol in the first place the evil demon we have be lead to believe or is it a very necessary part of our human make-up. The more you read on this subject its very clear that the medical profession cannot agree even on this subject. I suggest you read the finding on the tests conducted or just read 'Fat and Cholesterol are good for you' by Uffe Ravnskov, it will open your eyes to how the tests are conducted and by whom (has the wolf become the Shepard?) how the results are interpreted and published. No-one nowadays should be so naive to fall into the trap that the drug companies know everything and what they say is gospel and also that every medical professional looks into every drug on the market prior to prescribing! Just off topic for a second I can remember many people saying that human insulin was causing them to have really bad hypos when it first came out and no-one listened!!!!! Doctors like us can be taken for a ride by salesmanship via the drug companies and the results of the drug companies own test results. Humm, findings from the company that's making billions of £££, this is why many medical professionals are starting to look deeper into the results and indeed into some areas that have been lets say not looked into by the companies. It would seem that cholesterol level must go lower and lower each time you visit your doctors, this fact indeed leads me to start thinking 'well who's setting the levels and on what basis and WHY do the levels keep being set lower, if they were ok only six months ago why aren't they now'? So we all know that there can be many side affects with statins and to get some idea on how devastating the side affects can be you only have to read some of the blogs or topics on the net, you will find that many large institutes such as the NHS feel it's best to stay on the fence regarding this topic. Why is this? Who has shares in the drug companies that make many billions of pounds a year???? Humm who does???? pension companies, Government's????? Anyway I digress. What I'm saying is look at the facts (from all sources and where the facts come from etc) yourself prior to going or being forced almost onto statins and the possible benefits and side effects, dont be a sheep, question your doctor, ask them where their views are drawn from, are they just following a trend????? oh remember that statins just don;t reduce the production of Cholesterol, all I can say is after 4 long and painful years on many types of statins upto 80mg per day and suffering many many side effects I'm a new person after stopping taking them!!!!! will I die? of course I will, would statins prolong my life??? the answer would appear to be no and its my life just like getting on a train, are the KNOWN side effects worth suffering for a possible gain, a big NO, could statins lower my life span, look at the findings yourself.

Well having had a stroke, I feel much safer on a Statin. My husband has familial hypercholesterolemia which killed his father and caused his two brothers to have heart attacks and he is on a Statin and I'm very happy about that too.

Agree with you Didie, my OH's father a 'clean living' clergyman) died before he could collect his pension. His elder brother had a heart attack at 52. OH and two sisters were told to get tested. All had high cholesterol and trigs. They have are all been on statins and or fibrates, all are still alive, brother hasn't had a repeat attack. They all appear to be fit and healthy. Coincidence perhaps but .....
