Statins?

Mine is muscle pain. It developed after a few months, so I did not associate it with statins. Getting out of bed was intensely painful. Then I read a letter in the Balance magazine. I stopped taking them & the pain went within a week. But the same muscle is sensitive to anything that causes problems.

I wasn't warned of possible side effects, except the enclosed leaflet.

My chol level is around 5.0.
 
I was initially given Simvastatin (they always start with the cheapest!) but they ave me muscle cramps and also itchiness on my back. Diabetes-Specialist GP refused to believe symptoms were being caused by the statins; a different (female!) GP agreed to prescribe me Atorvastatin - symptoms vanished! Moral: don't give up on statins because the first option doesn't suit, without trying another
 
I also got prescription for Simvastatin last year i never ever took them and told my hospital consultant (another different one who does not even know me) she said you must start taking them even though my cholostrel level is good at 4.0.I go back in december and still have not took them i really dont know what to do for the best because i dont think them doctors know a thing.By the way do any other type 1 diabetics get their annual flu jabs???i had one since they fisrt came out about 15years (i think i may be wrong) but last year i thought no i will not it get this year and i never even got a cold!!so i am not getting it this year either because every year i got the ful jab i wasnt ill after it but i always seem to get a chest infection about february and its strange this year i never!!What does anyone else think of the flu jab?
 
Statins have shown to prevent heart desease aswell as having cholestorol lowering qualities. My father died from diabetic heart desease and kidney failure and his cholestorol levels were fine. It was so bad that when his kidneys finally packed the hospital couldn't give him dialysis because his heart was too weak.

I always get the flu jab. last time I had flu i was in hospital for two weeks.
Having trouble getting the jab again this year. they want to give it to me at 12pm on a saturday. I work 10pm-6am fri, sat and sunday. so can can see how undoable this is. The receptionist told me it either that day or not at all. :shock: I shouldnt be shock really as it always the same.

So I phoned the nurse at the hospital and she advised me to speak with either the practice nurse or the one of the doctors. So ive made an appointment with the doc. It just soooo much unessacary hassle. It would be easier if I could just buy the jab. Anyone know if its possible to buy a flu jab?

I was put on Simvastatin :twisted: on diagnosis had nothing but probs,aching calf muscles aching shoulders and neck, also started getting depressed and had nightmares felt completely drained.After coming off them the depression and nightmares cleared up in no time the muscular probs took a bit longer but have almost cleared up now. I'm going to wait till my next blood tests for cholesterol before I decide if I'm going to try a different statin.
I'm on linisiprol 5mg (ace) and Amlopodine 5mg for BP having no probs with these.

I think you can pay for a flu jab in large pharmacies, dunno how much or if you get it free for being in an 'at risk' group.

I agree they make it too difficult. Seem to assume everyone who needs a flu jab is retired or on the sick.

Statins also have anti-inflammatory action, which is beneficial for diabetic arteries, regardless of cholesterol levels. Working in a large cardiac unit I learned that diabetics tend to get diffuse deposits in the smaller arteries which are enough to cause significant angina. Unlike discrete blockages in the larger arteries, this type aren't amenable to reopening with stents. Also diabetics are more prone to 'silent ischaemia' (no chest pain, or breathlessness instead which may be dismissed as being 'unfit'), hence a full heart attack may be the first sign of trouble.

I have tried Simvastatin, Atorvastatin and Pravastatin and suffered months of agonising hand cramps. So bad I had to soak my hands in warm water several times a day just to get them mobile. In the end, I did some research into the side effects and came off them against my doctor's advice. I was put on a non-statin cholesterol drug - Ezetimibe - and my cholesterol is fine. My diabetic nurse has told me off the record that she wouldn't take statins. I guess everybody's experience is different but I am concerned that these drugs are being pushed as a 'one size fits all' strategy.
 
I was told it was entirely upto me wether I take them or not. he told me to do a little research a see what I think. Not had any side effect at all. which is odd coz usually if theres a side effect to be had I have it. It wanna reduce my chances fo heart desease my father died of ischemelic heart desease.
 
I have been taking simvastins for about 18 months now and have noticed that my calf muscles have started to ache and are painful sometimes. Also my shoulders, back and hands ache alot. Could this be a side effect of simvastin?
 
Would these sisde effect just appear randomly after 18 months?

Ive been taking simvistatin and I ache like hell. but I did skate hard yestereday. might be worth mentioning to the gp.
 
I've ached for last 2 years or so and I'm totally exhausted 90% of the time. The legs have been a bit painful for last couple of weeks. I have been on holiday twice in last 2 months and usually I walk most of the day exploring places/attractions wherever i holiday. If it carries on i will tell GP next visit. I find that most of them really don't want to know and say 'it's your weight, lose it and all your problems will go away'!! :shock:
