Statins

Diabetes is one of the recognised side effects of taking statins. Off hand, I'm not sure how common a side effect is (side effects in general are reported to affect 17% of those taking statins), nor do I know how long you might need to take them to induce diabetes, should you be vulnerable to this.

Ive been taking simvastatin amongst others for bp for over 10 yrs, its only this years annual bloods showing the diabetes diagnosis.. wasnt aware it was a side effect, should I ask to come off them?

Not sure in what context your question is, I am assuming as you have been diagnosed that you are asking if it can affect your bs readings, I am on statins and in my experience that haven't made any difference, in fact my Hba1C has continued to drop. There is a lot of controversy and different opinions on statins, some people suffer badly on them some are fine, all you can do is research them and make a decision whether they are for you or not

Hi lovinglife, just wondered if it can cause diabetes is it a good idea to stay on them, but as u say it doesnt make a real difference to bs then that's ok

This is a link to the Mayo Clinic page on statins. As regards diabetes, it says

Increased blood sugar or type 2 diabetes
It's possible your blood sugar (blood glucose) level may increase when you take a statin, which may lead to developing type 2 diabetes. The risk is small but important enough that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning on statin labels regarding blood glucose levels and diabetes. Talk to your doctor if you have concerns

This is the NHS page on the same subject

I think thats another question to ask the nurse on Thursday and maybe i need to see the Doctor that prescribed the Statins and get a review.

Hmmm.....probably shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted to stop now but I will be bringing the matter up, thanks bluetit

Did Pfizer Conceal That Statins Can Cause Diabetes?

Cholesterol-lowering drugs, so called statins, may cause diabetes. This is nowadays well-known and is listed among side effects you’re at risk for. But did pharmaceutical companies know this long before and try to keep it secret for as long as possible?

Thousands of people who have taken the drug and gotten diabetes have now sued Pfizer for keeping this a secret:

Reuters.com: Pfizer confronts surge of lawsuits over Lipitor

It will be interesting to see the result of the upcoming review, as Pfizer previously has had to pay record-high fraud fines for putting greed before patient safety.
