Hi everyone, I am 55 years old ,have LADA and use insulin and metformin from September this year.
My dosages : 17U of Lantus and 7U of Humalog before breakfast
6U of Humalog before lunch
4U of Humalog before dinner
A week ago I started to be sick (some kind of virus infection with lost of appetite, nausea, swollen neck lymph glands and tonsils ,no fiver, no vomiting and no diarrhea ). Not a lot of symptoms but I was surprised how it affected my blood sugar levels(went to 16mmol/l in the morning before breakfast and after meals as well ). I don't have any experience with sick days and panic a lot. Looked like I injected water, not insulin. I increased Lantus to 21U and today even injected 24 U in the morning and Humalog increased for 50% every dose, but still have to give correction doses 3-4U after meals , because 3 hours after injections of Humalog my BG is rising up. I am able to bring BG down but with much more insulin. My appetite is bed and I am forcing myself to eat.
I am skinny and now lost more weight, and I worry a lot.
Also last few weeks I had a lot of stress because of my sisters financial problems.
I finish antibiotic tablets 2 days ago(didn't help) and check ketones (negative). And I am resting a lot.

My questions:
Today is 8 days from being sick and I don't know is it normal for viral infection to last so long and still affecting my BG lakes first day?
Also I am not sure did I increase my dosages of insulin enough?
Or my current situation is all result of stress?
How to get rid off stress hormones?

Please help with some advice, because I am on my own. My endocrinologist is on holiday and I don't have support from my team now (Christmas time- the worst time to get sick).

Hi @stellazcj

We can't really give advice on doses as it's against the forum rules and we are not qualified to do so.

From my own personal experiences I'd expect your illness itself to not be playing a part in your high glucose levels if the episode ended a week ago and you feel ok in all other respects. But for some people, antibiotics can have a significant effect on blood glucose and if you only finished 2 days ago, then the medication will still be in your system.

You have correctly identified that stress can raise blood glucose levels so it's important to break the cycle of stress and high glucose levels. You may have some ideas about what relaxes you, a hobby you enjoy or going for a walk?

Thanks very much for quick response. If I stop stressing, will I still need a time to get rid of stress hormones or should expect BG to go down to normal quickly?
