I apologise for such a long post, but has anybody had the steroid implants as opposed to the VEGF injections ?
I saw the consultant last week after having all the scans and he offered me the injections but I'd read that these can cause a clot and a stroke or heart attack, as sime of the risks.
My dad died suddenly at 50 of a heart attack and my grandad who was diabetic and almost blind had heart disease, hence I'm worried.
Other reason being I was sent to A & E last November after waking up with double vision and balance issues. I had a CT scan then an MRI scan and the Neurologist diagnosed me with 6th nerve palsy in right eye caused by a damaged nerve and affecting the muscle, caused by high BS. Treatment was to wear a patch on either of my eyes and it should heal itself with tight control of BS. The consultant mentioned a stroke was seen, from when?? They do not investigate as MRI's can show strokes on lots of people.
My recovery took 18 weeks. During that time I had my diabetic screening which was 3 monthly then 6 monthly. My results came back with a referral to eye infirmary. Maculopathy, in the other eye. It was an 18 week wait. I've been offered the steroid implant which is every 4 months.
After doing research and from what the consultant said the risks are either glaucoma. Cataracts. Infection, migration of the implant. He said go away think about which treatment you want or if you don't want any treatment, then to ring him.
Honestly, I don't want any. I'm scared.
I'm 74 and type 2 on insulin rapid and long acting, recently been given the new Libre sensor. Already my BS has dropped and I've lost weight. The DN is very pleased.
It's been a week and I still cannot bring myself to make a decision.
Ive seen there is a sleep mask for diabetic retinopathy the noctura 400. I haven't fully researched this yet. I'd rather have that as non invasive.
Any information on the implants would be most appreciated thank you very much.
