Steroid injection and high Bg

Hi all,

Wondered if anyone had any thoughts...

I had a steriod injection in my finger for trigger finger on Fri a.m. Since then my blood sugar has run high, with only a few readings in the normal range. I'm testing pretty much every 2 hours and correcting with hit and miss results. So I've just changed my ratios and correction settings, so I'll see what happens. Hesitant to set a temp basal rate too as don't want to mess with everything at once, as my main prob seems to be ratios. Just wondered if anyone had experience with steroid injections and the consequences to bg, if any! I'm hoping this is what's causing it and that it'll wear off soon...

Hiya,
on average a steroid jabs effect will prob last 10 days. You will pos need to double your basal and also increase your carb ratio whilst the high blood sugars remain.

REALLY?! Flippin' 'eck! Didn't realise the effects could last that long. Couldn't find any detailed info on this and the best I'd found was that the injection may affect bg but not how much or for how long. Ok think will start a temp basal now too on top of already increasing my ratios and correction factor. Thanks

Is a steroid injection the same as cortisone? (forgive a non-native english-speaker) If that's the case, my bs was only affected for 3-4 days afterwards, so keep testing to see when numbers return to normal :)

Cortisone is a steroid yes :)
The jabs have different make up's though and it also depends where they are put. That's why I suggested the effect could last for about 10 days.
Hopefully in this case all will be well in a few days :)

Yes it was a corticosteroid injection. Am hoping the effects will wear off soon but good to know that if they don't then that's 'normal' too. I put my basal up by 30% and managed to get my blood sugar to 8 before my evening meal. Will see what happens this evening :?

SOOOO, bit of an update for the benefit of anyone who may be in the same boat in the future....

It's almost 6 days since I had the steriod injection, and I'm still running on a temp basal rate of 130%! Although since this afternoon I've noticed that my blood sugars have dropped and I'm eating 10g of carbs here and there to keep them up. So have just dropped to 120% (and may do 110% overnight) and am hoping in the next day or so will be able to go back to normal.
