Hi my names Steve and i have been diabetic about ten years,my main problem is keeping of chocolates and cakes, its like being addicted,i cant say no,my glucose levels are often between 8-10 which is not good,i have started at the gym as i know it can reduce my blood sugar levels

Hi Steve, you aren't alone, I was, and still am to an extent, a chocoholic. Carbs are addictive and are a hard habit to break.

In my experience you have two options, either quit all together, don't buy them don't have any and hopefully you will eventually lose the craving, or buy dark chocolate 85% (or 70% if the 85% is too dark for you) and allow yourself a few small pieces when the craving demands it as long as your blood sugar is low enough to take it. I allow myself a few squares in an evening as long as my post tea reading is 7.5 or lower, it is a great incentive to keep off the carbs with the meal, but I know for some people 1 square is never enough and they are better to do with out.

Keep testing and let it guide you.

Thanks for that info,is there anywhere else apart from lidl that sell dark chocolate with that high cocoa content

Tesco do an 85% Ecuadorean dark chocolate most supermarkets will have a version in stock,
Green and black do a nice one but I only get that if its on offer.

Hi. I can sympathise with you. I was a complete carbaholic. But do you know what? I started low carb diet and within 4 days the craving just disappeared.! Honestly. If I ever feel like something sweet I have berries just a handful. Or 2 squares of 80% dark chocolate and even that feels too sweet. I no longer snack or pick. Just no desire to. Absolutely amazing. And my bg readings are better every day

Hi Chalkie! I do sympathise too- but please don't give up! 13 weeks ago on diagnosis I literally went cold turkey on carbs and began lchf, after years of loving chocolate! I cannot believe how easy it has been, I now and then have a square of 90% dark (lindt brand) and it is so intense that it's enough! I usually grate it on my berries and double cream and it feels like a very indulgent treat but it's very low carb! One bar now, l lasts me two weeks as I no longer get the cravings of carbs! My tastes, have changed dramatically- I first had the 80% dark then it seemed sweet so went to 90% and somehow even that seems sweet now! Keep posting to let us know how you are doing

I tend to go for Green and Blacks or Lindt chocolate, it is expensive but compared to how much I used to eat of cheaper variants I do save money over all.

check dr josh axe he gives some low carb recipés which are sweet and delicious..
