Hi Everyone,

Has anyone ever heard of excess stomach acid having an effect on BG levels?

I have been told it does due to the effect it has on the Vagas Nerve, but I thought this nerve ran outside the gut so am not sure how that could work........

Also does anyone know how an excessive amount of growth hormone may effect BG levels?

Any ideas or views?

Regards

Simon

Hi

The vagus nerve controls stomach emptying and the production of stomach acid. Gastroparesis (slow stomach emptying) can make diabetes worse by making blood glucose control more difficult. When food that has been delayed in the stomach finally enters the small intestine and is absorbed, blood glucose levels rise. Since gastroparesis makes stomach emptying unpredictable, a person's blood glucose levels can be erratic and difficult to control.

After a bit of research it appears that excess HGH does affect BG levels.

Hope this helps

Hi Doug,

Thanks for that information, it's very helpful. I was recently diagnosied with reactive hypoglycemia and the consultant who diagnosed this advised it was probably due to my reflux acid issues, which I have had for 12 years. He kind of indicated that in essence the high acid levels stop the body absorbing the sugars etc as it should do, which was all to do with this Vagus Nerve. At the time I was also reported with an extremly high HGH level.

Yesterday I went to see a GI consultant to see if we can finaly get the acid issues dealt with and they told me there would be no connection! So am getting a little lost on it all.

It's all very strange, I am suffering all the symptoms of high and low BG levels, but my BG level is fine. I am seeing a dietician in 3 weeks, but have decided in the meantime to just eat as I normaly would and keep a diary to try and see a pattern.

So far I am eating what I want when I want and BG is fine, averaging 6!

Could be back to the drawing board on this one I think!

Hi Simon

Are you on any medication for the excess acid? A proton pump inhibitor (PPI) such as omeprazole is what I take to lessen stomach acid.
