Stomach pain with LADA

I was diagnosed with LADA 8 months ago and have been taking Metformin whivh i assume is keeping my sugar levels within range. In the last 6 weeks I have developed stomach pain that doesn't go away even with painkillers. I also have a numbness around the area where the pain is. Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this feeling and what you did about it as my Dr is no nearer finding the cause or managing the pain. Thanks in advance.

Hi @Andrea Mellor , welcome to the forum.

Do you test your blood glucose? What kind of numbers do you see?
The treatment for LADA is insulin, although it can take a while before you need it, and metformin can help a bit until you need insulin.

However, if your blood glucose is normal and you haven't had issues with side effects from the metformin before, I'd look into other causes of your stomach ache, a stomach ache is not something associated with LADA usually.

Not everything is diabetes related, what tests has your GP done to find the cause of your ache?

Waiting for an endoscopy but have had CT scan, ultra sound and blood tests, all are clear. Dr is baffled but that doesn't help my pain which I have no let up from. I had read that diabetes can cause nerve problems in the stomach but not sure how common this is. Any advise is welcome.

Hei Andrea, I was diagnosed as Type 1 3 years ago, at age 68, after undergoing investigations for..let’s call it ‘gippy tummy’. Had a colonoscopy and a pelvic region CT scan, which just showed some inflammation, a month later a blood test revealed a very high blood sugar and I was admitted to hospital for 5 days and started on insulin.
Am happy for my condition to be termed as Type 1 rather than LADA. The endocrinologist I saw earlier this month for a check up told me I am still producing some insulin, which tabulates with the small amount of insulins I inject each day. A temporary GP I had last year suggested that I should be on metformin rather than insulin, but the endocrinologist I saw at the hospital kept me with the insulin.
But…the relevant bit for you is that as soon as the medics started the insulin drip.. the pain in my lower belly vanished. I wasn’t even aware it was a constant thing, I had just learnt to live with it.
The diabetic nurse I saw at my first check up told me a lot of younger people get diagnosed when they rock up to A&E with severe stomach pains…
As Antje says not every condition is related to diabetes. I never got an explanation of why my stomach pain vanished as soon as I was given extra insulin, or what the possible cause could have been in the first place.
It sounds like your doctor is being very thorough with investigating possibilities for you, I hope you find a solution soon.
Best wishes, Marion

Thank you Marion, I appreciate that. Maybe I do now need insulin. I will try to see my diabetic nurse and go from there. Best wishes Andrea
