Hi
After a reading LOTS on the forums I have finally stopped lurking and joined the ranks ;-)
I was officially diagnosed as diabetic (GP has assumed T2) 3 and half years ago. Though I suspect I was diabetic long before that. I had gestational diabetes 8 years ago that was never followed up on.
I come from a long line of diabetics, (siblings, parents, grandparents, uncles etc). Many have/had complications such as sight loss, amputation, heart attacks. I didnt want to go down same path!
At diagnosis I was immediately prescribed metformin and statins......... I refused and said I wanted to have 3 months to try to bring BG levels down by diet alone. My GP refuses to prescribe meters or test strips so I buy my own (SD codefree).
I am lifelong vegetarian - previously my typical diet would be described as healthy (!) lots of complex carbs, tons of fruit and veg, very low fat - typical NHS guidelines
After diagnosis I insisted on a dietitian appointment - they said my diet was super healthy and not to change a thing!
I came home and read lots, researched and read scientific literature (lucky to have access via work). I radically changed my diet to reduce my carbs significantly and cut back on the fruit.
I have managed to lose over 4 stone, 3 years later.... HbA1C is typically under 35. Some days are easy......others are VERY hard.
Havent always got it right, I read a lot of US books and literature and have only just found out they count the carbs differently to UK - arghhhhhh.
Looking forward to support and guidance.
