Once you are prescribed medication is it likely that you will ever be able to stop and get back to controlling by diet alone or is it for life?

I don't think the medical profession encourage people to get off mrdication, but I know of plenty who have done so.
2 diabetics, if they lose enough weight, can often come off medication. I know I couold manage without my Metformin, my dose is so low. However, it gives me a little lattitude and I don't want to have to give up my seat on the 5% sofa.

Thanks for your reply. I don't need to lose weight and last year when I followed a strict diet I lost more than half a stone very quickly and the sugar levels fell. However, I kind of fell off the wagon and went back to my old ways of eating and the sugar levels shot up again, hence the prescribed medication. I have been doing the pills and following a pretty strict diet I was wondering if the doc would trust me not to have medication.

i have been taken off my gliclazide, although i have lost over a stone and was getting hypos. My gp did tell me i wouldnt get off metformin, statins or blood pressure tablets, simply because they are protecting my organs, as well as dealing with the BGs. My Actos is currently 45mg, and my target is to either get off these or at least drop the dosage, so as if my T2 gets worse when I get older, then I will have that cushion of meds prior to the insulin treatment.

hi I am 71 years old on insulin for 2 years and taking gliclycide as well I have recentley been put on metformin 1000 as well my blood levels r now crazy at this moment level is 23 can anyone make some usefull comments as I am very worried
Thanks dwleeds :?

Hi I was told I had type 2 about 5 years ago and I argued and argued that I hadnt. No diabetes in my family but I was told it was Steroid induced! as now Ive been on steroids for 9 years starting off on 60mg per day and taking years to get down. Still on 6 per day as my Temporal Arteritis reoccurs from time to time.
What I argue is I can go 10 - 12 hours without eating and have no faintness dizzy spells whatsoever.
I was told at the hospital that I had the funiest diabetes they had ever known. I take 2 spoonfuls
of liquid metformin (I cant swallow pills and one isnt supposed to crush these) one morning and one night.
Metformin gives me the most terrible wind sometimes I really cant go out as I feel like a trumpet blower it really is no joke.
I worry in case Im having medicine I dont really need pumped into me?
I go 12.7 two stone overweight the steroids put 3 stone on me straight away and due to my underactive thyroid and steroids I've been informed I wont lose it, and I dont eat much either.
I feel as though Im in a nowin situation. Does anyone else have this situation please?

Hi,
I was diagnosed a year ago and used this forum to understand and make sense of what I could do with this condition. This has been great so far and I was able to lose weight and bring my BG levels to normal. So now, I have been taken off Metformin ( 500mg x2 - then 1x 500mg), Atorvastatin 20 too. But for the last month things have been very upsetting as a result of a huge loss. Been feeling very unwell and had several blood tests, all showing normal and taking me off Metformin. But I am still not feeling well. I have been given strips to monitor myself, which I have been doing regularly since a couple of days.
My readings have been as so :
HA1C - 5.4
Glucose - 5.1
BG 2 hrs after eating porridge - 4.7
2 hrs later - 6.6
BG Fasting next morning - 6.3
3 hrs after breakfast ( porridge and tea) - 7.6
1 hr later after a few spoons of lentils soup and infusion - 4.8
this morning BG Fasting - 6.6

Not feeling great, dizzy ... why they were rising yesterday and why before and after I eat. I am just wondering whether Metformin should be back to my books. I know it is not good but then would it not prevent further damage to my body if things are not going well inside for some reasons.
I am keeping a low-no carbs diet - which has helped me a lot to lose weight and feel better ... and normal. My only shot of carbs is the bowl of porridge I have in the morning. For the rest, I keep to vegs, proteins, and very small slices of apple and pear. I snack on small amounts of almonds. I use fruits in my porridge in the morning. I also keep to low fat dairy and fat. I don't eat any white starch or sugar. No treats at all !

What am I doing wrong to feel unwell ?
Any help and suggestion/advice would be highly appreciated as I really going crazy by the constant unwell feeling and Docs disregarding anything wrong as per my results.

Cheers,
