Stress probably has a great impact on Blood sugar level . Can anybody share the experience on how stress works on diabetic pataints. I am trying to correlate my recent stressful condition on overall sugar level . That is why would like to hear from you

I can tell you a little story about how stress affected my diabetes/sugar levels:

I work as support staff in a secondary local authority school and I really do love my job - it's often stressful but that's fine and I can cope and it doesn't affect my sugar levels in any way. Beginning of the year it was decided that our school would become an academy in 2015. To "prepare the school for it" all old senior management were either placed somewhere else in school (as in not in senior management positions anymore), sacked or sort of forced to retire. My direct line manager was one of those people. We knew things would change but what we didn't realise was that our school got basically ripped to pieces and nothing is anymore as it was. I was directly affected by those changes and "restructuring" (nice word!!) and been removed from my office and put somewhere else and have been made part of a different team. They have also taken away all responsibility/autonomy I had in my own job, have given part of it to someone else who was newly employed and have basically told me that I would get told what to do and when. All this without ever discussing anything or seeking agreement. I was just told in August that from September on it would be like this and that was it. Apparently and that's the official wording "to safeguard my job" for when we become an academy.

Needless to say I was majorly stressed out and definitely didn't agree at any time to all these changes. There is a lot more to it - what I have written here is just a short version really. I have been/am in touch with our union and have been referred to occ health.

The day I went off sick in September I woke up with a BG level of 22 and made an emergency GP appointment and haven't been back so far. Up until then my hba1c was 6% for over a year and my latest one was 7.2%. Not horribly bad but worse than before. I have had high BG levels all these weeks where work and stress piled up and I couldn't get it sorted. The first few weeks I was off I was always outside walking and it did help massively.

Hope you get it sorted whatever is stressing you! xx

Hi Kitty ,thanks for your time to share your unfortunate story with forum members .We now know what a big difference in Sugar level exists because of stress . My case is a bit different , family related probably more frustrating .
Anyway, thank you again . By the way, what special measures are you taking to recover yourself from the situation and bring your sugar level back to normal? Are you getting positive results out of such measures?

My sugar levels returned relatively quickly back to normal after I was signed off to be honest. As I said I was fell walking a lot to get me de-stressed which was great. School is making it look like my diabetes is the problem and I needed support with it which is clearly not the case and never has been in the 14 years I have had different (and stressful) jobs. I will see what the occ health doc says later this week and go from there. Guess I'll have some sort of phased return or so..
