Stubborn Diabetic

Hi all
So, I was diagnosed diabetes four years ago. It’s been an up hill battle with everything in life. I'm relatively fit and very active.

Taking my meds is all good and I don't have a problem with that. My biggest challenge is my diet. I like a machine when it comes to food. For the life of me I can't balance my diet, I am no fan of veggies and I love meat. I unfortunately do it sugary things, not a lot but probably more than the average diabetic. The problem is that I'm always hungry! I only drink a lot of water when I'm busy and active. My blood readings average between 8 and 12 at the moment. My diet sucks probably cause I'm weal willed lol
At the moment take I take:
Metformin 500mg
Dapagliflozin 5mg
Sitagliptin 100mg
Sitagliptin 100mg
Losartan 50mg
I was on Gliclazide that worked will, my blood was between 5 - 6 then but the side effect was that I gained 10kgs, which was not acceptable. Since changing from Gliclazide to Dapagliflozin 5 months ago, I have almost lost that 10kg.
I know things aren’t good for me, my diabetes is not controlled well. Any advice / suggestions will be appreciated especially on alternative medication. I’m in the army reserves so I need to have medication that can stay with me out in the field.

Thanks

Hi there. My hubby was (and still is to a degree) a meat and spud man with a dislike for veggies. He was diagnosed as a Type 2 approx 4 months after me.

As you really love meat could you combine it with some veg you do like and some you don't like so much and put them together in a stir fry? My hubby often makes his own sauces so the food is a bit "disguised" and often uses creme fraiche or cream with red Thai paste, chillies and things like lemon juice.

Or, now the weather's getting colder what about a casserole / hot pot type of meal - comforting and filling but just watch how much potato you put in because of the carb content.

I can't offer any advice on alternative meds as I'm diet controlled myself and wouldn't want to potentially make you worse by suggesting other meds. Have you spoken to your Dr or a nurse about your medication? I think they'd be best to suggest and provide alternatives.

The good news is that you're fit and active which, as I understand it will help with your blood sugar levels.

Good Luck

Hi @isotsha changing your diet really.is the best option for long term health and control as the next step for you would really be insulin. Being fit and active is great but without making some changes to your diet nothing will change. It can be difficult to make changes after a lifetime of eating what you want. I was lucky because when I was diagnosed I was that sick that just the sight or smell of what I.would usualy eat made me want to throw up so I had to make the changes. Even if you can reduce some of the bad things in your diet with LC alternatives that would be a start, have you looked into LCHF at all as there are plenty of delicious meals and snacks you can eat. You really need to take.this seriously as we are talking about your health and its very important.
