Stuggling to maintain readings

I have been type 2 diabetic for approx 6 years. I started with diet control and unfortunately progressed to table control. I let my diabetes regime lapse when I was diagnosed with COPD & Emphysema in July 2010 and having regards for the implication of this, I gave priority treatment to the same. After a very slight improvement (following treatment), I have started to put in a determined effort in respect of my diabetes.
My current medication: 4 x metformin (500 mg) daily, 4 x gliclazide (80mg) daily, 1 x atorvastatin (10mg) daily, 50 units levemir (insulin) daily, and 1 x aspirin (75mg) daily.Despite varying times of medication etc, I am unable to control my before bed and before breakfast readings. They average 8.5 mmol to 12.0 mmol (bb) and 3.50 mmol. to 6.00mmol (bb). I can alter these readings if I miss meals??
Can anyone explain how to measure carbohydrates/sugars/protein etc of individual meal/in between meals/snacks/beverages etc? or am I just mentally challenged? lol....Regards Nidge 1

Hi,
Most food has the nutrition info on the pack, and if it's missing you can always look on the net. You just need to read the labels, weigh/ measure, and maybe get a calculator. Maybe a carb counting course would help you, it's worth asking your doctor/ diabetes nurse if there's anything in your area, also have you spoken to a dietician? Worth a try.
It's also worth doing some after meal tests to see which foods are best or worst in terms of raising your blood sugars. Low GI foods are the least likely to spike your BG, so it's worth googling for GI diets or getting a book.
Good luck :-)

Hi with all the medication you are taking i would think you may be overweight i do not intend to sound insulting i myself have been t1 for 30 years and i had problems as you have and it seemed that because of my weight, any change in your excercise regeme will upset your sugar levels.
Another thing that may cause this is a kidney problem as i had for many years until i had to have a transplant so it may be worth your while asking your GP to refere you for a kidney function test.
I hope this helps
