I hate to say this but he needs more veg and fewer pork steaks! I'd be able to cope with 2 if hungry - and a chicken usually lasts me 4 or 5 meals.
Also, how big was the "chunk" of cheese?
Have a look at
Viv's Modified Atkins Diet in the Sticky Threads section. That will give you a list of low-carb veg to choose from - anywhere between 8oz and 14 oz of
both salad, and other veg, per day. It also gives a list of other, acceptable low- or no-carb foods. If he sticks to this he'll get about 25g carb per day.
Try to get him to add in more veg and salad, and cut the protein a bit. Also mention that Metformin is supposed to suppress the appetite . . . no, it doesn't work for me, either!
Finally, and more seriously - keep a food diary for a couple of weeks, what he eats and when, and record his BG readings with it so you can look for links. If he gives my diet a go for two weeks, doesn't eat anything outside those lists, and his BGs still stay high, he should go back to the doctor. Occasionally someone will be diagnosed Type 2 to start with, only to find out later that they are a different Type. No need to worry yet - just bear it in mind.
Finally - how much plain water is he drinking? I try to get through 2 litres a day, including 2 cups of coffee. Dehydration can send levels up. His cold won't have helped.
Good luck!
