My diabetes has been a stable 6 on the hba1c for 4 years.
All of a sudden following an illness 2 weeks ago, feelung thirsty and dizzy I tested & my blood glucose reading has rocketed to 18, fasting at 14. Nothing else has changed.
Exercise seems to be increasing it.
Been to docs who says there are no ketones, doing a blood test and seem a little bewildered,
Does any one else have experience of this happening? And an explanation at all?
Some of the "candidates" in the Apprentice - I would never have employed some of the nasty individuals that pop up as potential employees in this show. If they are the best on offer then heaven help us!
This happened to me in March this year. I was always floating around 5's and 6's and a good work out could be relied upon to really get the levels down. Went through a load of nasty bugs and got equally nasty spikes to go with it. I know I spike when I'm ill and Doc tells me to keep testing and keep hydrated. As soon as I could I was back in the gym and lo and behold my readings were increasing rather than decreasing which was a bit of a bummer for all that effort. I found the attached useful that one of the other members sent to me which explains the effect of exercise on BG
What I did was to play about with what I was eating before exercise as when I was ill I was not eating anything much and very little by way of carbs. What I eventually did was to eat a small amount of carbs before I left for the gym (a couple of oatcakes basically or a couple of these Belvita biscuits also seems to do the trick for me). That small amount of carbs seems to keep my body happy as the BG levels started heading downwards again when I exercise. Might take a little bit of trying and testing to see what works for you.
Thank you for your advice re exercise.
Doc has just phoned & said that hba1c is now 11. No rhyme or reason why that should have rocketed and brushing off the illnesses I have had and the flu jab triggering latest bout of infection.
Been asked to take something beginning with a B! I spy .....
One a day and warned i can cause "false" hypos. Great.
I need to go and get the drugs and research the B word! x
It is 1mg of glimepiride, I see in info that comes with it that i should take special care taking thois drug if I am recovering from an infection with a fever (which doctor knows) or suffering from stress (doc didn't ask mne about!)
Also noite it is not as effective if taken with thyroxin, of which I have just had an increased dose as instructed by the endocrinologist.
So I now feel very reluctant to take this until the doc has taken the time to get the full picture. What do you think??
One of the issues with that class if drug is that it ca cause hypos if you take it and then do not eat. It forces the production of insulin and the insulin must have blood sugars to deal with. To little intake if carbs and your blood sugars can go too low. That happened to me when I was given that class of drug and I was taken off it and but on Byetta. That drug only causes your body to produce enough insulin and not too much.
Best to have a chat with your doctor and see what is the best for your particular situation.
