Sugar/carb allowance

Hi all. When I was diagnosed 2.5 years ago I was seeing the dietician and doing really well. Since then I have fell off the wagon big time. I'm hoping to start afresh and get my diabetes under good control.

My question is when I'm shopping for food I was told to look at the sugar and carb content and it should be no more than so many grams per 100grams.

Can anyone tell me the amounts I should be looking at.

Thanks, Sam

Re: Sugar/carb allowance

Hi Sam, are you type 2? You need to be looking at the total carb content of the food you are buying. Some foods list this as per 100g - check the front to see how many g the whole product is and estimate how much you may have as a portion. Most products also list the carb content per portion, especially for multipack products. Ignore total sugars. For low carbing you need to be looking at reducing your total carb intake. Some members take this very seriously. (I'm a patent of a T1 myself). If you have access to a dietician at clinic I would ask for some advice. I'm glad you are looking at getting back on track and hopefully someone will be along soon with more advice. Hope it all goes well for you. Best, Tracy

Hi, it can be hard to say, as we may get shot for offering detailed advice.
Personally I go for no more than 10% carb content and sub 60g ( about 2 tortillas) a day.
Some people do feel rough for a few ads when low carbing... That des wear off!
