sugar free antibiotics

Well 6 weeks post diagnose my 7 year old developed an ear and throat infection. She was promptly prescribed sugar free amoxicillin. The first pharmacy I went to tried to give me full sugar medicine I was quite relieved that I double checked when I got the bottle ! the 2nd pharmacy showed me the bottle (paranoid mummy) and it deffinatly said sugar free on it so I was happier, as the week has gone on her sugars have gradually raised to above acceptable levels and at first I thought it was the infection however her dad forgot to give her a team time dose last night, and her sugars returned to normal, and then immediately following the dose today her sugars have shot up. I have made the decision to stop them, she is 7 days into treatment, is better and only a couple of doses left so my question is can sugar free cause a raise in sugars-is there some sort of sweetener substitute that can affect her sugars ?

It's the infection raising her levels not the suger free antibotic and its normal for the infection to appear to be cleared within 7 days however its important to take the full course of the antibotics.

Definitely finish the full course of medication. Infection does weird things to blood sugar. And it's so important to complete the tablets or the infection is likely to return and possibly need even stronger medication.

Simply put, yes. What you're told - "BG up = carbs eaten" is a lie-to-children; the real process is considerably more complex but it works well enough most of the time.

Plus, there's a reason you are supposed to finish the whole course; stopping early to save a bit of insulin and risking the infection coming back seems... questionable
