Sugar in urine

I’ve been feeling bit under weather but I have ME and presumed it was that. But my GP ordered some bloods and a urine test. So lunch time today I went and did urine test. Now before I did the test I had a croissant jam large hot chocolate for breakfast. Then lunch I had chicken salad/Mayo baguette crisps slice of cake and 500ml Fanta. The urine test was next time I peed after all that which I presume was a lot of sugar. 30 minutes after the test the surgery called and said I need a blood test ASAP as was sugar in my urine. So I’m thinking especially the hot chocolate and the Fanta may have been a cause , I literally finished the Fanta 10 minutes before the test. Do you think what I’d eaten may have been a factor ?

Hi @Keano100 , and welcome to the forum!
As a rule, people without diabetes or prediabetes don't have sugar in their urine, so a blood test sounds wise.
There is always a small possibility of the urine test having been contaminated, for instance by any sugar left on your fingers when handling the urine container. Nothing to do but wait for the results of your blood test.

On the positive side, if it turns out you do have diabetes you'll likely feel better as soon as you get your glucose level down.

Good luck, and let us know what happens!

That's how I found out I was diabetic from a wee sample... the gp asked if I had had sugar in my wee before, to which I replied "no only in my tea"! The reality for me was a wake up call. Best place to be is here for info and advice, don't know what I would have done if I had not stumbled upon this site I am literally so very thankful.

Can I just ask something else while I’m here. I know thirst is a major symptom and I have been drinking more lately. But I’ve just been reading some stuff where people were drinking huge amounts before diagnosis. I never used to drink much maybe 1.5 litres a day. I’d say now it’s 2-3 litres which feels a lot for me. Sorry just trying to look for positives before get bloods done. Maybe I’m at the low end of scale ?

Hi my experience was just needing the to wee more but the gp said to me that diabetes is more of a gradual thing, so maybe not drinking as much before diagnosis, meant at that time you weren't diabetic or possibly pre diabetic if you know what I mean - it sort of crept up since? I'm not an expert but that's what I would leant towards. Apparently age is a factor also - gp made me feel pants lol

Thirst can be a symptom but many have no symptoms at all. If you’re drinking more because you’re thirsty for it, possibly.

Blood test is the right way to go.
