Being new to this I have a question about spikes in me blood sugar.
From what I've sussed out so far is that a rise of 2 in my blood sugar level 2 hours after a meal is ok.
What about if I get a sugar spike during the day that happens beween tests and it goes down when I do test?
What are the dangers of such a spike?

Test. Then you will know.

Knowing what you eat is important. Test if your not sure. Test if your confused. Test if the weather turns. It's the only way to know.

Your body is yours and will not be the same as others. You will get a feel for what is good and bad.

You will only get a spike from what you have eaten for the most part. Hard exercise can kick it. Some slow burn carbs can catch you out if they peak late. Stress for example can punch up numbers too.

Short answer.. Test.

Frequent spikes are to be avoided because they cause damage to the eyes and nerves over time. How much time is like asking how long is string. The ideal situation is to have small bumps rather than mountain peaks. Frequent spikes are like roller coasters - swinging up and down again. If you imagine your daily levels laid out on a graph, the graph line should be flattish with small curves and bumps, not a roller coaster.

I would concentrate on the avoidance of spikes that are under your control i.e your pre/post meal readings and as you say the difference should be no more than 2mmol but preferably lower than that (this happens as you 'empty glucose' from your bloodstream). The possible rises due to Dawn Phenomena or liver dumps (same thing) may not have fallen much at this early stage but they will given time. My advice would be to take a fasting reading and pre/post meal readings as random testing may be a bit of a waste of strips while you are still getting your head around the basics.

If you are keen on excercise/sport then you could test more if you feel the need but tbh there are times such as when we are stressed, fighting illness or sleeping badly when bg will rise whatever we do. So at this stage I would keep it simple, record everything and carry on learning about how your body reacts. This just takes time.
