Sunbathing

Notwithstanding other concerns (I'm a redhead, I know about them) is there anything to remember if you want to sunbathe as a diabetic?

Sorry if a stupid question, I'm still a newbie about so many things. Covering my bases as the sun is actually out!!

Just be careful and protect your skin, drink plenty of fluids, and try to keep out of the sun ( it's preferable) between the hours of 11 am and 3 pm, this is when the sun is at it's most hottest and powerful and you could wear a hat too.
Being a type 1, the heat can make us go hypo in the hot weather, but I don't sunbathe, too boring for me, as I couldn't just 'bake' in the sun, I have to be active and doing something, I love walking and exploring, especially along the beaches. Have fun
 
Yes, please remember that, Mad dog's and Englishmen go out in the midday sun, go out in the midday sun.
 
You have just gotta love this weather, not having to put on five layers of clothing to go somewhere!
Sitting looking at some clear blue sky and getting your healthy vitamins through just sitting there.
Looking at your garden that needs more work, your better half asking for things that you just don't want to do while you are relaxing.
Couldn't you do something!
Well, not why I'm reading my kindle, it's too b.....y hot!
Ill do it when the sun goes in, maybe!
Need a cuppa, she says, so do I!
Drinks water instead, boils kettle and pours tea, probably forgot something else from her orders!
What can you do, you did agree them vows!
So you get back on your lounger, close your eyes and realise the thing you have forgot, it's time for a small snack, time to see what the OH wants as well.
Does a turn in the kitchen, cooks fish for me and chicken for her.
Lovely bit of fresh meat that with a bit of salad.
Takes my cool water to the back garden again,
Drat! the sun has gone down behind the fence.
Ah well, have to do them chores now or I might not get to bed early enough for work tomorrow.
Who knows the weather might hold for a couple more days!
BTW, I love my wife dearly even when she gives me a deserved bit of a rough time!
She has it rough herself for a few years now!

Don't forget to slap on the sun screen! Factor forty in this heat.
I'm now turning a dark olive now, because of this great weather and working outdoors in it! Rather this, than 5degrees in January!
 

All common sense! With a good book I never find lying in the sun boring especially as I spend my working life running around.

Always wear a hat.

Seriously though, a lot depends on your diet, how much you drink, how much you sweat.
No one on here tends to eat junk anymore, so it's important to make sure you keep your salt up if you sunbathe and turn into a puddle.
I tend to make sure I stick to the recommended guidelines, varying it to suit the sort of day I've had.
I don't go mad, as there is still salt in canned food, sauces, eating out etc.
Obviously, if I don't have any processed food at all, I need a bit more.
Stay hydrated, as dehydration can raise your BG.

Beyond that, all the usual things apply.
 
I think the worst advice ever is to keep out of the sun between 11 and 15 as that will guarantee you get vitamin D deficiency.

Go out in the sun and don't use sun block.

Possibly true for the South pole?
 
Im also a red head,had several rodent ulcers in the last few years,No suncreams when I was a child 75 years ago.thats when the damage was done,I remember being taken to the chemist on every holiday we had and being given calolmine lotion,which dried hard on the skin.I burnt and peeled.
I love the sun and cope with it now and can get a tan if I do it slowley,and use factor 15 sun cream.all the best
 
The secret of a good tan is to do it slowly and not get burnt!

It's like a lot of good sensible advice, everything in moderation!

You build your tan up and depending on your suitability to the heat the higher number factor you need, a hat is always a good thing in really hot weather and sunglasses especially in low sun and more importantly when driving!

In hot country's, you can sit in the shade and still get a fair tan!
 
Thanks again for all the advice. I already understand the potential dangers of sunbathing - my question related to if I had to be aware of anything due to my diabetes. I'm now thinking not and will enjoy the sun with my usual cautions.

 

I am out and about in all weathers, so a tan from the sunshine ( of some sort) does build up. So I get lots of lovely vitamin D.

I love to read too, an avid book reader, but I start to get itchy feet ( but not literally) and need to be active, so walking in the sunshine is wonderful for the body and the mind.
 
Be careful if you're taking your insulin with you when laying in the sun - it can get too hot pretty easily. If you're just in your own garden then leave it inside, else put it in the shade if you can and try keeping it in a coolbag or Frio pouch.

I've also found that high blood sugars make me feel even worse than normal when dehydrated so keep an eye on that.
