I'm T2 on met and insulin. Tonight I had grilled steak, two veg, fruit for my meal at 7pm. Its now 11pm and my BG reading is 7.2. No way would I get through the night without a hypo. However I am not at all hungry so had a square of chocolate and cup of milky tea. What would others take? I suppose I should reduce my insulin but am uncertain.

Sorry, I#m a bit of a newbie, so my advice is a bit basic.. Maybe some nuts as a snack? Have you had a hypo before with readings like these?

7.2 =129.6 mg/dl in the system I use. I would get through the night without a hypo after going to bed at that level for sure. My official cutoff for needing a snack at night is 117 mg/dl or 6.5. I have found through setting an alarm and measuring myself through the night that I am actually fine going to bed at 100 mg/dl, or 5.5 or below. Everybody is different though and if you know that 7.2 after supper will send you hypo through the night then you should treat it.
I would treat my night time low with 6 oz of chocolate milk, or 1 slice of Healthnut bread with peanut butter, or 1-2 oz. of cheddar cheese and 4-5 wheat crackers. I add a little protein to the carbohydrate to slow down the spike, so I do not roller coaster through the night. I hope that helps.

I'm not an insulin user, so can't give you any opinion based on experience, however I would say that if you are routinely having to drive up your pre-bed reading in order to go through the night without a hypo then a discussion with your Medics seems in order.

Personally, I'm not a fan of eating to fit the medication. I'm a firm believer in the medication fitting my lifestyle.

Please don't go adjusting your doses without consultation, unless you have been told when and how to do this, and by how much in any one action. My view is you need supported next steps.

Thanks. I did indeed have a hypo at 6am and am feeling washed out now. Before bed, I took 4 jelly babies, piece of choc and milky tea. Not enough! Will discuss with staff in early Jan, my next appt.
