In October 23, when my HBA1c result had been 48 for 2 years, my surgery phoned to review meds. I had been on 2x40mg gliclazide, 3x500 mg Metformin daily and despite my protests they dropped Gliclazide and replaced with 1x 10mg Dapagliflosin and reduced Metformin to 2x500 mg. Because gliclazide can cause Hypos they made the change. I prick test before driving so I could detect a hypo. Never had one in 30 years of being diabetic.
Within days my prick test showed a dramatic increase in blood sugar to 10.4 fasting. Metforum reinstated to 3x599mg daily.
Nothing improved so I reported findings to surgery to be told prick testing is not recognised by them. I use Contour Pus app so am able to monitor 90 days or longer. At an NHS retinopathy exam by December there was a bleed in my left eye and surgery told to get urgent referral to eye hospital. Had to wait for HBa1c test and it was now 61.5!
By February nothing improved, had to see a newly appointed diabetic nurse, to whom I submitted my high readings. She immediately reinstated 2x40mg Gliclazide and withdrew Dapagliflosin. Within days the prick test showed blood sugar dropping and back to 6 fasting by March.
Hospital appointment came through and consultant exam showed now a minor bleed in left eye but no swelling. See me in 6 months but expected to be healed by then. Understood why the improvement but not the initial drug change.
Hba1c test in June result now 44.
Others in the area have had meds chopped and changed some even stopped with appalling results.
When you have Benn Diabetic for so long you know what generally works for you and how to control in best way. Deeply frustrated when what I class as inexperienced staff and doctors simply look at tables and make snap decisions which aspect my health.
