Sweet smelling urine

Hi everyone,

Just to give you a background, I am a 25 year old female and have had Type 1 Diabetes since I was 12.

My sugars are generally well controlled, if not a little on the low side. Over the last few days my readings have been in the region of 3.5-10.0.

However, for the past week or so, I have noticed that my wee is rather cloudy and has an odd smell (I guess you could describe it as sweet), and although I have not had any pain, sometimes I need to go to the loo urgently and suddenly.

Every time I look it up it would suggest Ketones, so I asked my pharmacist for some Ketone strips. However, they would not let me have any (even to buy) without a doctor's appointment which they can't give me for 2 weeks.

My question is, have any of you come across this before? I would have thought that if I had ketones I would have excessive thirst and weight loss, which I haven't? Could this also be a symptom of a mild but long lasting UTI?

Thanks

Yes, cloudy urine with an unusual odour can be a symptom of a uti. My doctor has in the past diagnosed them just by looking at the sample before confirming with a dipstick. The cloudiness is caused by white blood cells present in the urine. Another visual symptom is if it is 'bubbly' which indicates the presence of protein (albumen - the same protein that makes egg whites frothy!) . I am not a medical expert but you should go to a doctor as utis can be serious if left untreated.

Hi. It sounds similar to the symptoms I had with raised blood sugar and depositing sugar in the urine, but I assume you are still keeping your sugars below 11mmol the approximate level at which sugar starts getting dumped. I'm amazed you couldn't buy Ketostix as they are not a controlled 'medicine'. I bought mine off Amazon; same for my glucose strips.

Definitely sounds like a UTI.
I have one at the moment, despite having good glucose control. The urgent need to pee is always how mine start, and if left to fester, then become painful.
Drink plenty of water - some advice I've had is to drink enough to make you feel sick... then you know you've drunk enough to wash out your system. And, of course, see your GP.

As for ketostix, I too got mine off Amazon. I go for the urinalysis ones with protein, leukocyte, glucose and ketone indicators. As I am prone to UTI's, I've found that testing twice a week can pick up an incoming UTI before I have symptoms. More often than not, lots of water and rest keeps it from fully developing.

And the Greeks Mellitus - sweet/honey. Like many comments, it's a check up with the Quack, to sort any infection. The doctor will also tell you pretty quickly if there is sugar in your urine.
