sweet taste in mouth

I get sweet tastes in my mouth, but I've no idea what causes them.

This subject was on a Forum back in 2006 I remember.......there was mention of links to Diabetes and diet. However there are MANY other things which it can be down to. We are not Dr's so cannot offer a diagnosis.

What are your Bg levels throughout the day ?

I would suggest that this is something you need to discuss fully with your GP/DSN if it continues.

I am not an expert but I will share my experience...

When my brother was in hospital 2 weeks ago I said to him "your breath smells like pear drops" (the sweet) and the doctor was there and explained it to me. But I don't wanna get it mixed up, so I have copied this from a diabetes booklet from the NHS.

"This 'fruity' 'sweet' odor can be a sign of hyperglycemia (excessive blood sugar) and ketoacidosis, a buildup of ketones (acid) in the blood. Ketoacidosis, which occurs mainly in people with Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, requires immediate care.

I am type 2 and have had this incrediblely sweet taste in my mouth the last couple of days.... it is driving me mad :x i also feel so tired and thirsty, so am i hyper??? i don't know i've only been dx a month ago....how do others get rid of the taste????

A sweetish smell/taste can be caused by ketones (released when fat is used for fuel) these can be caused by a very low carb diet or when there is insufficient insulin to cope with blood glucose levels.
In the second case blood glucose is almost always high. (as described by purplepurple) above.

Test your glucose, (I've read in your other posts that you have bought strips) if it is very high then you should contact your doc promptly.

It may as Ken says be something completely different so I would follow his advice given earlier in the thread.

I'm interested in this thread because for some months now I've experienced a weird sweet smell in my nose. For a while I was trying to work out where it was coming from until I realised I was the only one who could smell it!! :shock:

I was diagnosed T2 at the beginning of June and since then have lost 2.5 stone, upped the exercise and am keeping an eye on my blood sugar levels. My fasting level was 10 at the point of diagnosis and is now down to around 5.8. Tonight after reading this thread (and whilst being able to smell the sweet smell quite strongly) I took a reading and it was 10.8 so pretty high. Therefore it could be down to high readings?

When I asked my GP about it, he looked completely blank and was frank enough to admit he simply didn't know. I have noticed the more weight I lose the more I can smell this scent! I'd be interested to read other's experiences!
