Apart from truvia that I bought a few days ago which sweeteners would you say tasted the most like sugar?

Truvia tasted ok in the muffins I made but in coffee its vile

Desparate for a cup of coffee but I like it sweet!

I've already swapped normal milk for lactose free to get the carbs down

Gave up sweeteners except in tea on the day I was diagnosed. My rationale was that if I took the hit for a while and lost any kind of sweet tooth then I would lose any craving for sweet things after a bit. Seems to be working two months down the line. Shame I can't shift the craving for sausage rolls and pasties the same way!

I've found Spenda or Sweetex tastes best (to me) in coffee and baked stuff. Unfortunately, all artificial sweeteners irritate my bladder, which isn't pleasant at all, so I have to keep it for to the occasional treat :(

Have you tried any stevia products Sirzy?

Just wondered as I suffer with terrible bladder problems & my GP suggested Stevia as its less likely to irriatate than others

Hi Helen,

I did try Stevia a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't find it very sweet at all and ended up having to use twice as much of it to get it to taste even slightly sweet (which isn't good for the carb count  ), I also found it to be a bit odd tasting, almost like it took a few seconds for my taste buds to register that it was sweet, very odd. But worst of all, it irritated my bladder more than any of the other sweeteners! :?

It's a bit of a ******, as I've been collecting alot of recipes lately and have really enjoyed experimenting with baking and cooking, but I've had to cut right back on it 'cos I end up in agony the next day

It's almost like having a UTI, it burns when I go for a wee, I have the urge to go ALOT (I end up getting up 2 or 3 times in the night), and I have a sort of pressure/pain in my lower abdomen, like a dull ache or a sharp pain if I sit a certain way :?

It took me quite a while and a few doctors visits before I realised what was causing the irritation, my dr was planning on sending me to a urlogist (which I really wanted to avoid  ), so I had a look on the internet at a few IC sites, and as sweetener was was the only thing I'd recently added to my diet I was convinced it must be that straight away. I cut it out for a few days and felt fine, ate some again one afternoon and was in agony again by the evening

I had a sweet tooth before my diagnosis, so I was really relying on sweeteners in my baking, but I tend to have much smaller amounts less often now, and have something like a mini milk or a couple of squares of dark chocolate if I'm getting desperate!

What kind of problems are you having with your bladder? Is there anything in particular that sets you off?

I have amost the identical symptoms as you! they come on really suddenly & last for for up to 3hrs or so although I am on the loo every 5mins!

I know fruit jiuce sets me off & lychees of all things! I love lychees sadly :( chilli/spicy food tends to be a culprit sometimes although not always which confuses the whole thing!

The jury is still out with truvia though as I was up at 3.30am this morning with it & its eased off during the day & now its back again tonight, I have eaten a mini muffin this afternoon & I ate one last night, I could jump the gun & say its the truvia but I drank a coffee with it in a few days ago & no attack after that even though I put loads in!

Might buy some splenda tomorrow & see what happens after that :?

It's really annoying isn't it?! I was really worried until I found out what was causing it, I was convinced my bladder had given up as well as my pancreas!

I read on the IC sites that acidic foods are suppose to cause bladder irritation, which might be why fruit juice and spices set you off, but I've found that it's only sweetener that does this to me, and I've tried all of them (splenda, canderel, sweetex, stevia) with the same results :(

Give the splenda a go, it's definately the one that tastes the nicest I think (and you can bake with it), although sweetex is good in coffee

Funny how the stevia didn't set you off at first, but did later on, maybe it has a culmilative effect or something :? Did you find it had a bit of a strange delayed sweetness to it? I really didn't like that, but I'd have put up with it if it didn't irritate, ah well, at least I know what I'm in for if I give in and make a cake with sweeteners nowadays!

I found it had a slight cooling effect in my mouth at first very strange, I have had some truvia this morning so will be interesting to see if it kicks off again later today :(

Have you ever tried Azo for your bladder? someone recommended it a few months ago, not widely available in the uk over the counter so I have bought it online, its a bladder painkiller & used for flare ups, safe to use with diabetes as long as you are not using urine test sticks as once you have taken them it turns urine an amazing orange colour it really is quite impressive  if you google azo standard & have a read, they don't work all the time but about 80% of the time they stop the pain/symptoms within 30/45mins

Hopefully the truvia won't cause you any prob later on, I had a sweetex in my coffee yesterday afternoon and was up a few times in the night and am feeling a bit sore today :( Sometimes I can't resist a cappaccino tho!

I'll look into the Azo painkiller, I usually just drink loads of water and wait for it to improve on it's own, and tell myself I'll never have sweetener again... until the smell of coffee gets too much and I give in again!

i never thought that sweeteners can cause bladder irritation. personally i dont really use them alot. is it something that is quite common with sweeteners ??

Claymic, I don't know about the bladder irritation but I'm fairly sure this person is only here to advertise this product, check their previous posts.

We had another one do the same thing a few days ago

Now been removed.....

I've used many kinds of sweeteners over the years. I HATE Aspartame and don't like Saccharine much. Splenda and Truvia are the ones I geet on with best.
