Hi All

I have been using equal as a sweetner in my coffee, have been reading that sweetners are really bad (equal has apartame). Is it better to use real sugar in my coffee?? just half a teaspoon.

Thanks!

Hi, Angela.

Real sugar is a good name. :)

Natural sugar is best. ( if you can find it )

Refined sugar is not good, However better than any chemicals.

You should try different types of coffee.

I honestly think this word sweetener is not good.

A lot of nice sweet substances are out there but expensive , eg; honey, Canadian syrup, etc;

I am also sure there is coffee's that have a pleasant sweet taste.

good luck

Roy :)

No harm in Aspartame from latest research I've seen. However, I've just switched to Splenda, based on sucralose (sugar) but one tenth the carbs of sugar, so same as canderel which I used (aspartame) and all other sweeteners. Even half a teaspoon of sugar is 2.5 grams of hoghly refined carbs and it soon adds up. Best to avoid sugar I think.

Someone, somewhere, said it was good to vary the sweeteners that one took, so I oscillate between Splenda and Canderel. Is this a waste of time? (at least it means they get to share the profits between them). I was in a Starbucks the other day without my sweeteners and tried the Sweet & Low that they supply -- revolting taste. By the way, could we have a petition against hotels and restaurants that only serve those oversize fake lumps of brown and white sugar and don't provide sweetener? (presumably for aesthetic reasons -- wouldn't look nice in the bowl?).

I think that DUK used to say that it was a good idea to vary them so as not to go over the maximum amount for any individual sweetner.
I looked it up and now they say:
The government provides food manufacturers with guidelines on the maximum levels of sweetener that can be used in specified foods. The government also surveys sweetener consumption in the general population and in specific groups such as people with diabetes and young children in order to monitor trends and ensure that the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of individual sweeteners is not exceeded. Current trends show that most adults are unlikely to exceed the ADI for each sweetener on a regular basishttp://www.diabetes.org.uk/Guide-t ... fAodllEArA

so unless you use lots of sweetners then there probably isn't any good reason to vary them.
People have an individual tolerance to polyols though because of their laxative properties .
