Swelling on left hand side

Hi everyone

I am quite a recently diagnosed type 1 diabetic (April 2011) and for the last few weeks my blood sugars have been all over the place again.

I have had such a sore throat for 2 weeks which has been so bad I thought it was maybe tonsillitis or a throat infection but since Saturday, I am now full of the cold and feel terrible. My blood sugars are still really up and down which I understand is normal when you are unwell.

I now have a new problem, for the last 2 days I have had a quite painful ache in my left hand side, just below my ribs. It feels like a stitch but it's not in the right place )if that makes sense?) I can feel a bit of a swelling and it it very tender to touch.

I am going to my GP this afternoon to see if I need antibiotics for my throat so I will ask her, but I just wondered if anyone had experienced this and what it could be?

We can't really speculate what is causing the discomfort in your side but you are doing the right thing seeing your gp, bg can be erratic in times of illness but hopefully they'll improve once you start to feel better.

Good luck today! :)

Thank you for your reply.

I ended up in hospital yesterday, I phoned my diabetic team as I was worried about the ketones and they asked me to come in. When they did a blood ketone test it was 2.7 and they called for a Dr to come and see me.

He checked me over and he suspected i had pneumonia. They were going to admit me as when they checked my ketones again an hour later, they were at 2.9.

After a chest x-ray and blood tests they allowed me home as my ketones came down with some extra insulin and my chest x-ray was clear although I did have small shadows on my lungs.

I have to wait on the results of my blood tests and I may have to go back in today if they find anything.

Hope all goes well today!
