I swim between 80 and 100 lengths and what i find is that i run out of energy during the swim and want to get some extra energy from something . What do you suggest , would prefer it to be fluid based as there is a need to hydrate too ? I eat my breakfast about an hour before i start the swim and never swim for more than an hour or so .
I am type 2 and pretty well controlled about 6.1 hba1c .

does your breakfast contain any fat or slow digesting carbs? i think your probly looking for some slow energy burn, have you tried eating just before the swim?, nothing too heavy, maybe a 9 bar with flax, i eat these before running sometimes and dave a regular exerciser guru also eats them, maybe worth a try, i know the common theory is to not eat too close to exercise, but i recently read some folks get on well eating just before races, may be worth a try, best of luck

If you want something by the side of the pool with you, you could try diluted fruit juice. Start with say 100ml in a 500ml bottle. Try to structure your intake so you don't actually start to peg out, and don't take any towards the end of your swim.

Also recommend same as Andy12345. A good slow release brekki and hour before (if you don't already do that).

I regularly swim 3 or 4 km and never need to fuel, even with my new meds.

A bottle of HIgh-5 4:1, or BikeFood sports drinks, both contain carbs and protein as well, which could be useful over the time you're working. SHold be easy enough to leave a bottle by the side of the pool. WOuld give you the carbs plus hydration you wanted
