Swinging BS levels

Hi

I'm currently taking 2 x 80mg gliclazide a day but my bs levels never seem to stabilise. They swing from being around the 4.5 mark all the way up to 16.
How long should it take for medication to kick in and is this tablet likely to do it by itself?
I'm watching my carb intake and am drinking plenty and trying to be more active so i;m hoping that will help.
I'm gonna be changing doctors after easter so hopefully I should get some better advice from the nurses there as at the moment everything I know has come from here!!

Many Thanks

Louise

Hi Louise

I have just spotted your post. Have you changed GPs yet?

Most diabetics would need to be taking metformin with gliclazide as insulin sensitivity is often a problem. Metformin would help the insulin produced as a result of the gliclazide to work more effectively. Rather then gliclazide with metformin, you might want to see if your GP will prescribe one of the newer diabetes drugs such as Byetta with metformin. Gliclzide forces your pancreas to produce insulin independent of the amount of sugar in your blood. Byetta will get the pancreas to produce insulin only if it is needed. In my book that has to be better.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards

Doug
