Hello, my 11 year old daughter has had diabetes for the past 5 years but just recently, I would say the past few weeks I seem to have lost control of her blood sugars. By this I mean that they go from high to low and back again regardless of the changes I make. I am up and down 2,3 times a night and every night seems to be different. Then we get to the weekend where she needs completely different basal rates. A Saturday is different from a Sunday and there doesn't seem to be any regular pattern. At the moment I feel like our life is taken over by diabetes and I do not know what to do. This is really getting me down as know matter how hard I try I never seem to get anywhere. I have a very good friend who helps me out but I feel like i'm constantly putting on her if you know what I mean. I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this and how I go about fixing the problem. Martina,x

At 11 she will be coming into all the puberty hormones which cause havoc with BG. If you're struggling I would suggest speaking to a DSN about it for some guidance

If she is on a pump, you can have different ratios at different times of the day/ on different days, but if there is absoloutly no consistant pattern then talk to a diabetes nurse... they'll provide more insight than me based on specific details. You can see if background insulin is right by doing a no carb day (ie only eating meat, veg, egg, cheese etc) then measuring bloodsugar levels. You can then change background at different times of the day if neccessary.... whilst it can be very erratic, chances are that because hormones are starting to kick it, you just need a slight change in routine regarding diabetes, maybe with ratios or eating times, or anything else. This may be hard at first, but is achievable, with help ect.
