Hi guys,

I'm new here so I'll introduce myself before asking a question :)

My name is Dean, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes a little under a year ago, I'm 29 and have no diabetes in my family so it was a total shock when I found out I have it. My case is a bit mysterious as my doctors can't figure out why I have it or even nail down the type/case 100%. At the moment they are saying it's Type 1 that has gradually come on a gotten worse over time. I'm on medication right now, but the docs think over time I'll end up on insulin.

I get ulcers and strange rashes on my legs which I'm pretty sure is the diabetes and any little cut on my hands tends to get infected and take ages to heal. Recently though my eyes have been giving me trouble, getting very dry and itchy and today my eye has blown up like I've got a black eye, without me hitting it or anything. I was just wondering, is this likely to be due to my diabetes or just something else?

What do you guys think?

Thanks for reading my post :)

Hi Dean

Unfortunately, I can not help with your eye question but wanted to say welcome to the forum just the same.

Can you tell us a bit more about you?

What are your typical sugar levels like?
What's a typical day's diet?
What medication are you on since you are not on insulin.

I am a type 2 and admit that I always assumed, perhaps naively that all type 1s had to take insulin. Obviously your beta cells must be still producing your own.

I hope someone can come along with more direct responses to your enquiry. For what is worth, I have never experienced what you describe.

All the best

Hi Pavlos,

Thanks for the welcome, this looks like a really friendly place and it's nice reading about and communicating with other people who have diabetes. I don't actually have any friends of family who have diabetes so kinda feel a bit alone with all of this.

My sugar levers start at around 8 in the morning and then fluctuate between 8 and 14 throughout the day. Before I was on medication this used to start at about 8 and then just constantly rise throughout the day until it would be around 20 before bed.

I'm on Gliclazide twice a day and Metformin once a day, but to be honest I don't feel that the Gliclazide works as well for me as the Metformin does. The doctors have only recently decided on Type 1 (as before that they thought it was MODY, though this didn't make sense with me not havin any family with diabetes) and were reluctant to prescribe until they'd sent me for what seems like a thousand blood test (even had camera up/down "both ends", not pleasant ;)).

The doctors have said that I do produce a bit of insulin on my own, and they're trying to boost that with medication, but that they think eventually I'll become insulin dependent.

I've recently moved home too to a different area, with a new doctor so I have a feeling this will all start again in terms of tests and medication, I have a doctors appointment on Tuesday to address it.

Hi nixeldev, and welcome!

Like Pavlov, I cannot answer your question, but by answering, my post will bounce your thread back up to the top of the list, and hopefully someone will see it who can answer.
:)
How is the eye today?

Thanks Brunneria :)

The eye is still swollen, and has now darkened a little, like as if it is bruised.

I do tend to get dry eyes from time to time as I work with computers all day, but this feels a bit different from that. I'm hoping it'll go down over the weekend but I have a doctors appointment on Tuesday so will mention it and see what they say.

@nixeldev it sounds like you have burst a vein and have a haemorrhage, it will come out as a bruise.... you aren't talking about the actual eyeball are you, that's a get to hospital now thing with diabetics?

have you had your foot, eye tests... and teeth looked at

how is your BG going, as you know this is the foundation of good health

Hello Dean and welcome to the forum!
I hope your eye is feeling a bit better? It sounds like an infection. Maybe mention it to your new GP when you get your appointment on Tuesday, or go sooner if it's really troubling you. High blood sugar often means that infections are slow to clear up, and your blood sugars do sound high.
I understand your shock at being diagnosed, because, like you, I was diagnosed Type 1 at age 29, and there have been no other T1's in my family. At the time, my life was too hectic to really give enough time to my health. I'm 60 now and have really only recently started to look after myself better. I've had a lot of help from great people on this forum.
So I'm thinking you've come to the right place at the right time. It's a puzzle that you were diagnosed Type 1 but not prescribed insulin. Presumably, as others have said, your beta cells are still functioning somewhat. As you say, there are other forms besides T1 and T2 - MODY and LADA for example - so I hope your new GP and clinic will soon help you get your blood sugar under control.
Let us know how you get on. All the best!
