Hi all,

I've been travellig quite a lot recently, just short haul flights but a lot of them over the last few weeks. Also been spending a lot time on my feet. Anyway, my feet and ankles have become quite swollen. Not painful, but a bit uncomfortable. Anybody else experienced anythig like this or have any idea what might be causing it?

Any thoughts welcome!

Em

Dear Em,

I would suggest that you go to my posts - "Swelling (Oedema) of legs, ankles and feet".

My condiiton started with the feet swelling some two or three years ago - I now have kidney damage. I AM NOT SAYING THAT YOU HAVE but do not leave this symptom especially if you are a diabetic.

With best wishes,

Rob

Thanks Rob. I did see your post and it did cross my mind that it could be an oedema. The swelling has gone down a lot this morning and I can actually see my ankle bone again lol. I'm hoping that it was just a reaction the the flight + high heels (probably something that you don't need to worry about!) + heat. I'm going to jeep an eye on it over the next week or so. Have an appointment with the DSN mid June soni will definitely mention it to her. Got a few more trips between now and then so it'll be interesting to see if the same thing happens.

How are your legs and feet now? Hope they're not giving you too much grief.

Dear Em,

Nothing can be done for the kidneys except to take ACE Inhibitors to protect them from further damage but they of course still fail to remove enough water from my body without the help of diuretics. If I take them for a few days the residual fluid is controlled for a similar period and then I have to repeat the process. "Seeing your ankle bones" again identified myself with you - it is the test I use every morning on getting up. The rule is to try to reduce the swelling in both legs, ankles and feet during the night and hope to have reduced swelling before sleep.

You may have observed that I apparently caused the damage to my kidneys using Quinine Sulphate and I must admit to having all sorts of spasms and threats of serious cramp during the night now. Posters have advised the use of Magnesium Sulphide (ate?) and it looks as if I may have to ask my doc about its use. QS was so wonderful in this respect but I would rather live.

Would suggest that you walk up and down the aircraft aisles once or twice - it makes a great difference (leave the high heels under your seat ha ha ha).

Nice having the chat with you,

With best wishes,

Rob

Em,

I would have your legs checked by your gp just to be on the safe side.

Will definitely get it checked when I see the DSN in a couple if weeks. I had two back-to-back flights, which I doubt helped! Fingers crosse it's nothing to worry about, but better safe than sorry and all that. They look like they're back to normal now. Just need to get working on the tan lol :)
