My 7yr old son has recently started wetting the bed after being previously dry for almost 4yrs, after a visit to the doctor he found ketones and protien in his urine and had a questionable blood sugar level. The doctor has now ordered a fasting blood test for monday morning. I am now really worried he may have diabetes, does anyone else recognise these symptoms as the onset of diabetes?
I'm no expert but the bed wetting may have been caused by ketones and the sugar level would make it look that it may be diabetes. Does he go to the toilet a lot and is very thirsty.
Hi. Sadly diabetes is one very possible diagnosis. At least you don't have to wait too long for a test result. As ketones are present do watch out for any deterioration in your Son's health which can happen if the blood sugar is also raised. I'm sure he will be fine until the blood test results but if in doubt do call the GP or go to A&E
Thanks for the replies. He isnt unusually thirsty but does go to the toilet quite frequently. Blood suger was only slightly raised but could the ketones and protein be down to dehydration? How dehydrated do you have to be to have ketones and protein in your urine?
I'm sorry to tell you this but your son does have a lot of the early signs of uncontrolled diabetes. Had you noticed if he was drinking a lot more than usual and going to the toilet more frequent.Another sign is your son may have a lack of energy.
If he is diabetic don't worry,I've been diabetic sinse 1977 and once controlled by injection your son can live a 99% normal life.it takes a few days to get use to injecting then you never look back.
