Hello

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes last year. I take no medication at present but have developed some strange symptoms over the past few weeks.

I feel like i am drunk, quite sick and giddy. I cannot concentrate and an so tired but cannot sleep at night. I am working but find it very hard to work. I have really bad pains in the bottom of both my legs. Could these symptoms be part of the diabetes? Tried to get GP appointment today as I feel so faint but cannot be seen until next Tuesday.

Thank you

Hi Julie

Have you checked your BG levels ?

These could be as a result of diabetes but you really need to see someone before next Tuesday.

You should try phoning NHS Direct to see if they can shed some light on your problems if you can't get in to see your Doctor before then.

Hi Julie
I too would say get your blood glucose checked. If you don't have a meter, go to a pharmacy. they can do it for you. If it turns out to be high9 over 20) ask them to check you for Ketones too. If that's high too go to A&E.
Otherwise, this doesn't automatically have to be diabetes. How's your blood pressure?
Pharmacy can help with that too.

All these are typical symptoms of high blood sugar levels.

What you are describing sounds like diabetic neuropathy - the end result of having consistently high blood sugar. If not reversed then the nerve damage will become more severe, leading eventually to complete loss of lower-limb circulation and amputation. Fortunately your neuropathy can be reversed by getting your blood sugar down to a safe level (generally thought to be below 7mmol). But the first thing you need (if you haven't already got one) is a blood test monitor. Without this you won't have a clue how your blood sugar is doing - a bit like trying to drive while wearing a blindfold!.

Have a good read around the forums, especially the food and low carb forums, for ideas on how to bring those blood sugars down. Please ask if there's anything you are not sure of.

PS If you doctor tells you that you don't need to test then get yourself a new doctor - you are already experiencing for yourself what uncontrolled blood sugar does to you!
