Hello

I'm 30yrs old and have no diabetes in my family to my knowledge.

I have always had a problem with dropping sugar levels as when i am hungry i am horrible/irritable, heady and shakey. I can't concentrate and the shakes have been so bad that i haven't been able to drive. If i come accross food when feeling this way i have been known to take handfuls of cold left overs / anything i can get my hands on and force it down quickly - like an animal (usually i am very ladylike - honestly)!!

I had a mild cold last week and this week i thought i may have had the tale end of a viral thing. I have felt 'extremely' tired, groggy and heady. All i want to do is curl up and sleep. Getting up in the mornings is hard and i'm drinking a little more than usual.

Today i had 2 slices of toast at 10am, i was on my way home at 1pm and popped into the supermarket. I was shaking with hunger and all of a sudden i thought i was going to pass out. I grabbed a packet of crisps to eat in the car on the way home (i wasn't driving)! When i got home i ate a cereal bar whilst my beans on toast cooked (needed something quick)! After i ate that i slept on the sofa and now continue to feel groggy and a little more thirsty than usual.

I guess i just wondered if i should leave it and see if i feel better in a few days as maybe i am over reacting? Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thank you in advance

Hi Hayley, best person to ask is your GP, symptoms do sound a bit diabetic but you really need to make an appointment to rule anything out, good luck and do let us know.
I had an idea I was from similar symptoms I wasnt going to bother the doc with viral stuff, but I was advised to go and after blood tests was diagnosed with type 2. So just to put your mind at rest book an appointment.

Hi. Many pharmacies, including Lloyds, will do a free blood test for diabetes. It's not a full test but will check your sugars at that time. You could then see the doc afterwards if needed or anyway if you remain concerned. Having low sugar would normally be the opposite of diabetes, unless you are on diabetes medication, and can happen in some people if they haven't eaten for a long time. Do get checked anyway because it could be you have high sugars not low?

To be honest, sounds like low blood sugar episodes like my (non-diabetic) daughter gets rather than diabetes, but if in doubt, get a check. it's easy.
