T1D - Continued weight loss


Yes my insulin is fixed, 3 lots of 3 units of nova rapid and 4 basal. I can adjust my rapid by 1 unit up or down if I eat more or less, but usual is 3. I've avoided extra carbs to keep me in range, but substituted this with extra protein. I've found when I have a digestive biscuit it sends me higher until the next dose of insulin
 

Ok, well if you're on fixed doses you're more limited. No,wonder you're not eating that much carb-wise. When I was diagnosed, I was on fixed doses too but I was able to eat more from the sound of it, so I put my weight back on quite quickly. My carb allowance was sufficient for me to do that.

Perhaps you could ask about upping your doses enough to cover what you want to,eat (again, within reason, of course).

If you haven't already got it, I highly recommend the book Think Like A Pancreas, and I also recommend getting more help with carb counting and adjusting your insulin. It's not hard and it's not necessary to wait for a DAFNE course to do it on a simple level

Meanwhile, you could,try adding more fat and protein to,your carb allowance and see if that helps.

But I do think a chat with your DSN would be helpful.
 
Im eating lots of meat and tend to snack on chicken satis, legs wings,? Also peanuts and nut bars.

I used to drink a few lagers (3-4) at the weekend, but I've been tee total since diagnosis,

At my DX my BMI was 17! Much too thin. They told me tomeat 20 c per meal to help bridge the insulin gap while I was bringing down extremely high bs. I gained my 20#s back fat but I needed to. It was probably the combination of more carbs than I was used to as well as finally absorbing my protein. After 2 months of living bloated daily ( what carbs does to me ) and having bs I couldn't control I dropped back on carbs and insulin and the weight gain stopped.

If you are on fixed doses you pretty much have no choice and need to eat the same amounts as long as bs stays in order. My Doctor lets me do whatever I want.
Do you know how many carbs you eat per meal/day?
 
Until you learn about carb counting and adjusting insulin, you could eat some carbs (without a bolus) before exercising. There could be some trial and error till you find the correct amount to eat to prevent hypos.
 
Once I was diagnosed, I had already lost about 20 pounds. About a month to two months afterwards, I gained all of my weight back and gained some more. It all just takes time and eating the right foods so when you gain the weight back, it's not bad weight. Hope this helps.
