Hello
I'm being investigated for this as I'm having some weird problems with my right leg and I've put some weight in the last year (albeit I have been much less mobile until recently and was probably eating more). My doctor doesn't think it's vascular and my DSN is weirdly not concerned about neuropathy despite my godawful sugar levels as I've only had T1 for 10 years and I am "too young". My doc said although my right leg has a slightly weaker pulse, my hair growth is normal, colour is normal, and I do not fit the bill for PAD as I am 33 and never smoked, wound healing on that foot/leg is good and although I am overweight I am not massively obese and have a healthy heart/kidneys. My T1D is not well controlled, however, since the Libre became a CGM and I am trying to walk 10k steps a day, I've noticed a dramatic positive change in my blood sugar control. Walking absolutely PUMMELS my blood sugar into range very quickly, within 1 hour. I really want to walk 1 hour a day for fitness, weight loss and better blood glucose control.
I heard that 1 in 3 type 1s get an underactive thyroid. Mine hasn't been checked in a few years. I've recently been diagnosed with Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction and am soon starting treatment to hopefully resolve all my migraines, jaw and neck pain. Apparently the right side is way worse according to my chiro so it's very possible this is all connected with my jaw being out of whack and impacting my spine etc.
Since May I get mild edema in my right leg especially if I am working from home all day sitting, which was easily sorted by wearing some very funky duck pattern compression socks. However, I've noticed that my right calf seems to get fatigued very easily which is worrying and frustrating when I want to walk 10k steps a day and eventually I want to go jogging. It's the same sensation as when you run up the stairs or walking uphill but I get it when walking normally outside and jogging was.. well, kinda not happening. Couldn't manage more than 15-30 seconds, I wasn't breathless, the fatigue in my leg is just too much.
I want to get fit, and I've always walked a fair bit so I don't think this is down to being THAT unfit. Doctor also said edema is rarely seen in PAD/vascular issues and more likely to be underactive thyroid or something compressing in my pelvis which I am gonna get an UltraSound for at the end of September. I am also on the wait list for a Doppler (sp?) test in my leg. I've been tested for most of the nasties such as DVT, kidneys etc - all clear. My leg definitely feels colder than the other one which also has me worried. It's not cold to the touch but it just feels a bit strange.
I've also noticed my muscles fatigue very easily in my arms too, just by holding a book in bed, or holding my arms up. I've been working out the last few months and I don't think it's down to being weak or unfit. Before I started taking this seriously, I was walking about 2-3 hours a week, and my lil biceps are quite firm now when they were jelly before LOL. I definitely feel better and have more energy since exercising.
I haven't noticed any dry skin or brittle nails, but my hair is dry and never grows past my shoulders. I often get a tight full feeling in my throat but this is also a symptom of TMJ.
I'm not 100% sure but I THINK the calf pain is worse when the weather is hot. It's definitely in both legs but my left feels more like "normal overuse" rather than "feeling like I've walked up 25 flights of stairs burned out" if that makes sense.
The pain is not so bad that I have to stop - I can walk through it but my goodness it's difficult.
I'm curious to hear from other type 1 diabetics about this?
