I have had type 2 diabetes for about 2 years and am on Metformin. Just recently, i have been craving chocolate. This usually happens about half an hour after a 500mg dose of Metformin. I have discussed this with my diabetic nurse who told me not to eat chocolate due to the fat content, but offered no help to stop my cravings. Coincidentally, this started at the same time as my dose of Atorvastatin was doubled to 20mg per day. Any feedback?

I would be far more concerned with the sugar and carbs content of the chocolate, rather than the fat! You don't say what type of chocolate you are eating, but I often have a couple of squares of 85% cocao or higher chocolate with little impact on my BG

Walnut_face is right. A square or two of the "good stuff" won't affect your glucose level too much.

Hi, :)

Do you take your Metformin at the same time every day? With or after food?

The reason I ask is that for a looooong time I used to get sweet/choc/treat cravings after my evening meal, sometime around 20-30 mins after I finished eating. It was a right pain. And very tempting to tuck into something sweet.

What I think was happening, was that my blood glucose hadn't started to rise from the meal, at that point, so my body was asking for quick carbs to boost the blood glucose, not realising that the food was already being digested and the blood glucose would rise very soon anyway.

So, if your experience is anything like mine, it may just be that waiting another 5-10 minutes will see the craving evaporate into thin air as your meal digests.

If that isn't the case, then maybe something like a handful of nuts, or a slice of cheese would probably do just as well as the choc to kill the craving. And without the carbs and sugar that the chocolate would bring.

Hope that helps.

Metformin might not be strong enough for your carby meal. A lower carb meal with your metformin might solve the problem. Too high the carb meal, the more likely a craving takes hold.
