Takeaway dishes high in illegal colourings,

They were also very variable as to nutrient content. Some were very high in fat or carbs (v high sugar in some cases) and some in both resulting in very high calories but others were at the more 'healthy' end of the spectrum.
The problem is knowing what you are getting.
Chi Tikka Masala
Fat: 4.6-18.4 g/100
Sat fat 1.6-8.3 g/100
Carb 3.7-19 g/100
calorie 129-268g/100

Sweet and Sour Chi
Fat 0.6-18.5/100
Sat Fat 0.2-4.62/100
Carb 8.3-30.9/100
calorie 84-272

If you bought the sweet and sour with the lowest total amount of carbohydrate your dish would have
29.5g carbs, if you bought the one with the most it would contain 204g of carbs. (that's without the rice)

I haven't had sweet and sour chicken (or any other Chines,e take away) since I developed diabetes.
I used to like it but was worried from the start that it would be impossible to give an accurate dose for it. This just confirms it!

Shocking to read that 20% of nut-free Tikka still contained nuts, far too risky to order from take-aways if you have an allergy I would imagine.

The sugar, salt and fat content is equally bad but not surprising, anyone who eats fast food on a regular bases should already know the health risks of consuming such foods, fine as a occasional treat but that's about all.

Phoenix, it is difficult to give a accurate dose for take-away food, when I do eat a chinese I always order from the same take-away and order the same meal (chicken and mushroom curry with fried rice) and from past experience I now know how many units to inject for that meal. The dishes come in the same size container each time so this makes it easier to calculate, I always give a split dose of insulin to cover the meal and usually get very good results.

I'm type 2 just on Metformin so can't compensate. If I have a Chinese I go for...

Chicken & Mushroom or Vegetable soup for starters
Chicken & Mushroom and Egg Foo Yung for main

I have tried this combination from about 4 different establishments and it usually puts me up about 2 or 3 after 2 hours, and I eat the full portions of each....so a lovely big feast!!

OK for a treat like most such food but one should also be mindful of the salt content which is nigh on impossible to know.
All of these foods rely on taste for sustained success and health or nutrition imho come way down on the list if at all. This is a shame really. I suppose it is no different from any commercial food source.
Conversely, I have tried jars of sauces to make my own but these seldom taste as "good" as takeaway or restaurant meals. Have had some success with curries without too much compromise. 8) Just ease up on the bread and rice.
