Hi I'm very new to taking care of my Father-in-Law. His wife left on an emergency so she didn't have much time to teach me in taking care of him. To be quite honest I don't think even she knows the right way to take care of him. So today is day three and i checked his blood sugar and it was at 127. His doctor prescribe taking 17 units of Levemir once a day and 3 units of Humalog 3x a day. I was not sure if I should give him the insulin since these last two days of giving it to him his sugar was constantly under 80. He told me not to give him neither this morning . Did i make the right choice? Or should I have still given him Levemir?

Hi Lee, and welcome.

Bumping your post up so that someone who understands insulin protocols can help.

Keep up the Levemir but if below 80 mg/dl it is reasonable to reduce the Humalog.

Why does he not take care of the diabetes himself? Is he disabled in some way?

Yes he needs help with everything. And so far I'm giving him the Levimir every morning. Humalog only when his sugar is high. I've been checking his sugar 4x a day. Its very steady now. No more sugar going up or down like before. In these last few days I've only given him Humalog once and he is actually feeling better. I hope I'm doing good.

That's great news. You are taking good care of him and he is very lucky to have you looking after him.
