Target reductions for people with complications

Hi all - quick intro. I have had type 1 now for 29 years and for a good number of years my diabetes was badly controlled. As a result I have some complications. My control has been much more stable over the last 10 years and thus my complications have been stable - however my diabetes is still in the poorer range. My HBA1C is 8.6% and I've managed to get it lower once or twice but it tends to loiter there abouts. (Not for lack of trying!!)

Now, I started the DAFNE course this week and unfortunately due to COVID-19 the course ended up being cancelled.

So I am now sort of following the basic guidelines of DAFNE and my glucose has been fairly good and I am feeling a lot more in control. Those of us on the course though we're told if we have any complications and poorer control that it would be acceptable for our targets to be slightly higher than the DAFNE targets to prevent further complications by changing HBA1C too drastically.

So I've decided I'm quite happy if my blood glucose is around the 10mmol mark for now, even though I think I am capable of lower than that. What do you guys think?

I'm also wondering as well if I tighten my control and do manage to reduce my HBA1C over time - what sort of reductions and time frames in HBA1C are healthy for somebody with complications?

I'm aware I need to speak to somebody medical about that of course, but as everything is a bit up in the air it's been quite hard to keep good contact with the diabetes team.

Thanks in advance and I hope everybody is staying safe.
