If you are prescribed medication then exemption cards are available. Diet only? then you aren’t eligible.the 1st thing my GP did when I was diagnosed was register me as a diabetic, at that time all meds for everything, meter, strips, everything became free to me or subsidised by the NHS/Govt.
The day after I was 60 I went into the Tesco pharmacy waving my exemption card and the Pharmacist lady said with a huge grin on her face 'you don't need that now as your 60'.
Not sure if you can still get an exemption card but it helped.
I’m glad you said that..... I hour after 10.7. 2 hours after 10.5 ! I thought it was a low carb small meal. You should be super excited with every little sign that you are going in the right direction. Just don't worry if you suddenly get a spike for no apparant reason, happens to everyone. Just carry on.
Thank you so much. It is great to hear from someone who has been through the same. I don’t want any more medication as I am on the same as you at the moment ( gold standard they say) except no meds for diabetes as yet although I am sure they will want me on more meds after tomorrow’s meeting but I will try diet first otherwise I will never know.If it helps you, I had a heart attack in May last year and a stent fitted in a blocked artery. Whilst in hospital diabetes was diagnosed with Hba1c of 108. I was put on Rampril, bisoprolol, Ticarelor and Antorverstatins. I was also put on mixed insulin twice a day as the Consultant is adamant it protects the heart. I have just been given the choice of reducing the insulin with the aim to cut it out completely and move over to Metformin.
I immediately stopped smoking and cut out all sugar in tea coffee, fizzy drinks, cakes, biscuits chocolate, potatoes, rice and pasta.
My last Hba1c in December was 55 and I am hoping to get below the magical 48 at the next blood letting in April.
I attended an Empower Course where they stressed to eat to the EATWELL plate, including Carbs. However I have found many peoples advice on here to be far better and have followed low carb
If you do go on medication - Make sure it is the right thing to help prevent further cardiac problems.
You sound as you have things sorted in your mind.
Just take it steady as it can take up to 12 months for your body to recover after the angioplasty.
Best wishes on your recovery from one a bit further down the line.
No other tests other than a follow up cardiac appointment which is standard. They are saying type 2 and seeing the diabetic specialist at our practice tomorrow ( Friday)Are you waiting on any other tests? Is there any question of type or suggestion it may be type 1
They said I can only walk! But it’s 7 weeks now since I had the stents put in. Cardiac specialist nurse said to wait until cardio rehab say I can but then said it’s a good 8 weeks wait before I could be “ invited” to take part! Why can't you ride?
I should also mention that none of my horses are exactly quiet to ride. A slow hack round the block may or may not happen!!They said I can only walk! But it’s 7 weeks now since I had the stents put in. Cardiac specialist nurse said to wait until cardio rehab say I can but then said it’s a good 8 weeks wait before I could be “ invited” to take part!
As in on my own two feet. They said I can only walk! But it’s 7 weeks now since I had the stents put in. Cardiac specialist nurse said to wait until cardio rehab say I can but then said it’s a good 8 weeks wait before I could be “ invited” to take part!
I would except she then admitted she knew nothing about horses and riding so how can she give advice on something she knows nothing about?Frustrating but best do as cardiologist says.
Do you mean no way you would be riding?Your specialist is right ... no way I'd be doing that
Thank youIt does sound better to avoid riding for a while if your horses aren't the quietest rides - might be different if you had an old plod. But I know what you mean about walking the dogs not being the same as going for a good ride - especially now spring is coming.
All the best, and I hope you can ride again soon.
between a rock and a hard place at the moment as they are saying I can’t ride my horses or do any of the heavy jobs ( is no lifting or shoving!) and I am feeling worse and worse not doing the amount of stuff I normally do. Feeling down and that is unlike me as normally I just go for a ride and all is well. Sad to say that although I do enjoy walking the dogs it doesn’t have the same uplifting effect on m
Thank you. I was down to do rehab at one place but have been told there is an 8 week wait. Decided to be more proactive today and called the hospital. They have said I can go back there for a stress test and then do the monitored home program and have booked me in for 21st of this monthTake it slowly and you will get back on the horses. Think Marathon - Not Sprint.
Ask them about the cardiac rehab course. They should refer you on one.
I did it for 6 weeks - It really helps get your heart fitter and also helps you adapt and come to accept what has happened. I got some great advice from them.
Keep the lifting minimal for 12 months.
Good Luck - Each day gets better
