Terrified for my baby's health

We just got doctor's confirmation that we are 4+ weeks pregnant (Yeah!)... but I m super terrific coz i am Type 2 diabetic diagnosed (a high 10) since last year 2015 and admitedly i haven't been compliant with my medication intake (I was taking on and off Metformin). Have since stopped since Oct 2015. Then in Dec 2015, we moved into a new place with a small gym, Since x'mas, i been regularly exercising and managed to drop about 3kg. At that time my fasting level was at 6.6 (still a bit high, but respectable) but the last 2 weeks i slowed down, since i started noticing pregnancy symptoms.

During the OB&GYN appointment yesterday the doc told us that it is a risk factor to our baby if i don't control my blood sugar level and for the next 12 weeks, it is crucial that i do. So, i started searching on the internet, what is the complication for the mum and baby, what is the best food to take, what to do, etc. The more i read the more scared i am about my baby's growth. At 4 weeks plus, we can only see the pregnancy sac, so i am not even sure if my baby have been affected by the diabetes yet.

What have i done? I am so scared for my baby, hardly slept last nite. This morning woke up with a level of 7.6.
I am so lost now...
If there is a kind soul out there, please please let me know what i can do for my baby.

first thing is try and slow down and stay calm -- being all worked up won't help anyone.

I definitely think you should get in touch with your care team for some reassurance if nothing else.

@himtoo is absolutely right - don't panic! Stay calm and make a plan.

First thing to say is that what you read are possible complications. Most babies of diabetic mothers are fine

From what you've said, your blood sugars haven't been super-high, just out of the recommended range. It could be much, much, much worse, so you really shouldn't panic about your results.

However, your doctor is right - starting from now you do need to control your blood sugar. That way you'll reduce any risks greatly. You should be seen by a team specialising in diabetes in pregnancy so you get the best support and advice. You should also ask about taking folic acid. I'm not 100% sure about Type 2s but I know a special high dose folic acid tablet is recommended for Type 1 ladies in pregnancy. This reduces any risks even further. Speak to your doctor about that as soon as possible to check.

The blood sugar targets for pregnancy are strict. This is to make sure all goes well. There's no reason why you can't achieve these, with help, and have a healthy pregnancy

Pregnancy can be scary, especially when you first find out but please stay calm and don't stress as that won't help your bg's!

Well done on your weight loss, please take the medication you are supposed to be on, this is now not only for your benefit but your unborn baby's also

As azure has already said there are tight ranges you need to be in you aren't too far outside of those ranges at the minute but do try and get a hold of things so you stay within them

Never Google complications for anything, it's like when you have a headache and it tells you your head will fall off within 24hours!

Try and enjoy this exciting time and keep your diabetes in check as best as you possibly can, it will be hard work but will be worth it
 
Thanks ladies for your support and reassurances. Guess since this is my first child, and i already 38, it really scares me a lot. I just measure myself a few time today and i keep on being just out of the recommended range. Today i only had egg salad. What can i do to keep into the range? Doc recommend<5.3 fasting and <6.7 2hour after meal. Can i resume taking metformin? Is metformin safe for baby?

I am going to see an endocrin next week, hope he can tell me what to do next. I am already taking 5mg folic acid and obimin. I don't know what else can i do ..
 
Hi, you will need to speak with doc about your medication, try and record down all of your readings, fasting, before & after meals etc this will help the doc to know what will really help you during this time for the best control
 
Yes i will, appointment tomorrow. Pray for me and baby, woke up today with 6.4 (not too bad), measurement 2 hrs after breakfast was 9.3 !!! shocking and i only had fried noodles! dear Lord, that was so scary because i hardly ever reached that level. Only had egg salad with a piece of bread for lunch just now.. Am recording down all the measurements, my fingers is totally "pricked" out., sigh,
 
Hi @Bunny21, when I found out I was pregnant, it did make me a little anxious and concerned about the babies well being. and obviously my age, I was 42 1/2 and my 'baby' is now 15 and a healthy and a happy teenager.

Definitely get your medication sorted. The highs don't sound like your fault. Without the right meds at the right dose, it can be hard to control your blood sugar. The doctor should help you find a regime that will work and will allow you to eat the healthy variety of foods that you and baby need

Thank you so much for ur reassurance .... feeling so worried with so many risk factors against me and baby, taking one day at a time. Even when my baby is about 5 weeks now, and we havent heard his/her heartbeat yet... i been talking to him/her.. feeling really close to him/her..... will break my heart if anything bad happen ..
 
Don't listen to all the scary facts. As you have read there are so many positive stories! Sometimes pregnancy does funny things to your body that are out of your control! Don't panic! you are making sensible choices and finding out all the right information and asking for hell and reassurance! I was 15 weeks when j found out i was pregnant (type 1 12 years at that point) it was terrifying but I soon figured the doctors have to tell you worst case scenario! The pregnancy was a struggle, but we are hoping to try again so it couldn't have been that bad! I have a healthy 5 year old now! He was a big boy when he was born and had to spend a bit of time in special care as is common with children from diabetic mothers, but he is completely healthy now. Just remember there are so many people around to help you and support you! Good luck X X X

So far, my doc put me back on metformin and this morning i woke up with a 7.6 urghhhhhh... probably coz i wasn't sleeping well last nigt.

Had my oat breakfast then in the next 2 hrs, will check again.. sigh....I rub my tummy today and said to my baby, "baby, mummy will do anything to make sure u are healthy"
Waiting for the 6 week scan to make sure baby is ok..... another major major hurdle to cross.... pray for baby
 
Exactly, u will do all u can! R u just on metformin at the moment? Are the docs thinking of putting u on insulin too? X
 
@Bunny21 Hi there. You need to relax. Many many healthy happy babies are born from diabetic mothers. The fact that you are so conscious of your blood sugars is good.
I had 2 pregnancies where gestational diabetes came with a bang and I was insulin dependent on both. It's a matter of finding what you you can and can't eat.

Starving yourself and sleeping bad are sending those readings in the wrong direction. These early weeks as your baby is forming are important. I would have had an egg for breakfast every day with one slice stoneground bread. That kept the morning reading at bay. Lunch would've been a salad. Snacks were nuts and cheese. Dinner was unprocessed food, relatively plain!

But remember diabetes control in pregnancy is so strict so these few months of hardship will be so worth it.

I kept my levels well but there were days when the readings just didn't go my way. But at the end of the day I've 2 fab healthy kids.

You'll be fine. Try and enjoy this experience. It'll be so worthwhile. Good luck
 
Thank you so much everyone for your kind kind words and advice.....

I m now at the 7th week marker. Today we had a scan, and for the first time we saw our beautiful baby's beating heart... such an emotional feeling, carrying a living person inside me... My readings are averaging between 5.9 to 6.5 now. Have been taking 1000mcg of metformin twice a day (after lunch and dinner). it is tough watching the sugar level roller coasters but it have been worth it and for baby, i will have to be more disciplined! trying my very best to be there for baby.. Will update more

So happy for you @Bunny21 seeing that little heartbeat flickering away is a beautiful moment! Well done on your levels so far you are doing great, I imagine especially now you've saw that little bean on the screen it will drive you even more to have the most perfect levels you can but don't be hard on yourself and don't stress yourself as it won't help either of you xx

Keep testing, keep up the good work and think of that little life growing inside you. It's a miraculous thing, isn't it?
