Test

Hi. There are a number of ways to test for glucose levels in blood. Fingerprick uses capillary blood, most HbA1cs are done using whole blood drawn from a vein, and the glucose in blood plasma can also be tested, which is what I think you've had done here.

According to Bilous and Donnelly, the relevant plasma glucose values are:

Fasting

Normal <6.1 Impaired fasting glycaemia 6.1-6.9 Diabetes >7.0

2-hour blood glucose (oral glucose tolerance test)

Normal <7.8 Impaired glucose tolerance 7.8-11.0 Diabetes >11.1

So your result shows as well inside normal range.

@Dee1960 , you had two different types of tests performed on your blood. Your first test was a plasma blood test. It’s usually done after a fast. This test simply tests the amount of glucose (blood sugar) present in your blood plasma. It’s similar to taking your morning blood sugars when you wake up in the morning. At 4.2 mmol/ls your blood sugar, when they tested your blood, was well within range. It’s not really telling you much. Other than your blood sugar was at 4.2 in your blood plasma.

The second test they did on your blood was your HbA1c test. This one is more useful.This test measures your average blood sugars over a 3 month period. It does this by measuring how much glucose has attached itself to your red blood cells. At 62 mmol/Ls mol your blood sugars over 3 months averaged out at 62 and are in the diabetic range.

In short they tested how much blood sugar was in your blood plasma in that moment following a fast - Fasting blood sugars

The HbA1c tested measured the average blood sugars over a 3 month period.

It’s a little confusing as they used two different units of measurement. There is a discrepancy numbers because they are measuring different things.

The first result posted shows the blood plasma glucose to be 4.2 mmol/litre.

The second result posted shows the HbA1c to be 62 mmol/mol.

These tests have measured different things in different ways. The first gives a snapshot result of what your blood glucose was at the point of testing. The second gives an approximation of where your blood glucose levels have been over the last three months or so.
