Testing on waking up

Hello

I'm new to regular testing whilst trying to work out what carbs are right for me to include in my diet. Every day my first test on waking is in the upper 6s 6.8, 6.9 etc. I'm aiming for below 6. Is that right or do I just assume something near 7 is right for me. 2 hrs after evening meal seems ok at about between 6.7 and 7ish.

What's happening during the night that it's not going down?

Sounds like you've got good steady over night control there!

Ideally you should be waking up the same as bedtime, unless you've had a midnight snack or something.

If you try lowering the morning number from what you have you might find that you have hypo's in the night, so my advice would be either a) make minor change in basal and monitor carefully so that you dont go low in the night, or b) stay as you are.

personally i would be happy with that as a waking number, but we are all different and we all have our own personal goals.

You might also be experiencing something called Dawn Phenomenon, where the liver starts creating glucose just because it can :)

Some members have found eating a little protein before bed helps reduce this effect.

mimi. what type of diabetes do you have and what control do you use? those will affect your numbers.

I'm a type 2 diet and excercise only at the moment, for which i'm eternally grateful, but it's really hard work. If I can really get a handle on the exercise thing then I might have more control, the numbers quoted above were when i've been being good and i know i have to work towards being good for much more of the time.
